“But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.” 1 Samuel 8:19-20 NIV
God warned Israel that a king would exact taxes and pervert justice (see 1 Samuel 8:11-18), but they wanted to be like other nations. So God gave them a king. It turned out that Israel had 43 kings over a period of 450 years, but only 8 of them followed the Lord. The people did not put God’s will above their own.
Jesus taught us to pray,
“Thy will be done…” Matthew 6:10 KJV
In the garden, before the crucifixion Jesus prayed,
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” Luke 22:42 NIV
The key to following Jesus is to obey God. The Israelites wanted a king even though they were warned against it. They thought having a king would be the answer to all their problems. All the other nations had a king, after all!
Asking for God’s will to be done is not just something to tag on to the end of our prayer. It must be the desire of our hearts, our aim, and our will.
When we consider what the Bible says about God’s will, it is important to remember that Jesus said,
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21 NIV
We know that God’s word reveals His will. This is why it is so important to read and study God’s word daily. Don’t be like the man who built his house on the sand.
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Matthew 7:24-27 NIV
Jesus made it crystal clear that God’s will could be summarized like this:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31 NIV
Wherever we may find ourselves in this life, let us love Him completely and love the people He puts in our path. And let us obey His Word. Then we can know that we are in His will.

The Apostle Paul wrote,
“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” 2 Timothy 4:3-4 NIV
Unfortunately, this is happening today. Why? Because too many Christians just don’t know what the Bible says. They may study books written by “Christian authors”, but that is not a replacement for reading the Bible.
In the past, I read many, many books by well-known Christian authors. I was hungry to learn everything about God. But this mistake led me down a false path and led to pain and heartache. It is only because I was also reading the Bible that I eventually escaped from this trap. Now, I am very cautious about what I read.
To neglect the Bible is to repel God. To neglect the Bible is to embrace ignorance. To neglect the Bible is to fall prey to all manner of errant teaching and doctrine. To neglect the Bible is to embrace humanistic thought and philosophy, a sure recipe for moral disaster.”

“Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.” Acts 20:28-30 NIV

May we hunger and thirst for God’s Word. May it be a lamp for our feet and a light for our path.
