The Apostle Paul wrote,
“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” 2 Timothy 4:3-4 NIV
Unfortunately, this is happening today. Why? Because too many Christians just don’t know what the Bible says. They may study books written by “Christian authors”, but that is not a replacement for reading the Bible.
In the past, I read many, many books by well-known Christian authors. I was hungry to learn everything about God. But this mistake led me down a false path and led to pain and heartache. It is only because I was also reading the Bible that I eventually escaped from this trap. Now, I am very cautious about what I read.
To neglect the Bible is to repel God. To neglect the Bible is to embrace ignorance. To neglect the Bible is to fall prey to all manner of errant teaching and doctrine. To neglect the Bible is to embrace humanistic thought and philosophy, a sure recipe for moral disaster.”

Cindy that pie chart is very sad indeed, but it doesn’t come as much of a surprise. In my early days I like you read many books, but realised the need to be a Berean – reading and studying the whole Bible for myself. Nowadays I appreciate how short my time is in this world, thus I treasure it by spending more time drawing close to my Holy Father in His Word and in prayer. May He bless you abundantly in His Word and in His Spirit this weekend sister.

Once I realized that I had followed errant teaching I had to “unlearn” many things, and it wasn’t easy. The first thing I did was to read the New Testament 3 times. God’s Word is powerful and the Holy Spirit is ready to be our Teacher. I praise God for delivering me from false teaching. He is faithful! Blessings Alan!

I so agree with you Cindy about being cautious in reading the so called Christian books. I now stick to reading the Bible and honestly do not miss any of those books.
It is a dangerous path we tread if we do not for ourselves take time to know what is in the word, very easy to be led astray.

Excellent post by you and David! It grieves my heart how the church is being led astray by false teaching. I despise the enneagram and I am constantly encouraging my mentee to walk away from it. Praise God His Word is MORE than sufficient and the more we read His Word the more we know this is true! Thank you again, Cindy!!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. Before I retired from teaching, I attended a professional development training on enneagram. That was the first I had heard of it, but I knew it was not pleasing to God. I am sad that this would be pushed on unsuspecting teachers. Another reason to read your Bible! Blessings Mandy!

Thanks for the timely message, Cindy. I was listening to a discussion yesterday that was shared with me by someone thinking I would like it, because the people kept pointing to Jesus’ words to make their point. But close to the end of the video, one of them tipped her hand, misquoted Jesus, and gave away that she was New Age through and through.
(I think I have the topic for my next post… 🤔)

Great post. We need to know what the Bible says if we are going to be able to distinguish truth from error.
Related to this, I wonder how often we get into debates over how to live out our Christian lives, and we don’t realize these people don’t actually read the Bible.

One of the most important things we can do in our Christian walk is to read the Bible. It’s how we know God.
And, it is harder to unlearn something than to learn it right the first time.

It’s interesting that 20% of Americans have read the entire Bible at least once; that’s actually more than I had expected! As you alluded to, we have to test everything else we read by God’s Word, but if we don’t read it, we can’t.
