Do you ever get stumped? You just don’t know if it is God’s will for you to do a certain thing. You think it might be, but you aren’t sure. I searched the Scriptures to find out how to know God’s will. This is what I learned:
1. Pray
The writer of Hebrews prayed,
“Now may the God of peace … equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” Hebrews 13:20-21 (emphasis mine)
Jesus said to pray like this,
“Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10
King David prayed,
“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
for to you I entrust my life.
Rescue me from my enemies, Lord,
for I hide myself in you.
Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God;
may your good Spirit
lead me on level ground.” Psalm 143:8-10 (emphasis mine)
2. Seek Wisdom
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (emphasis mine)
3. Search God’s Word – His will is revealed in Scripture.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.” Psalm 119:105
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 (emphasis mine)
4. Know God’s Heart of Love
The better I know God, the easier it will be to know what He wants me to do. I need the mind of Christ. I need to know His heart. I have to remind myself that it isn’t about me, it’s about the things He cares about. Jesus said,
“Love your neighbor as yourself.” Romans 13:9b
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:29
Remember when we used to say, “What would Jesus do?” That was very popular in the ’90s. I think we need to get back to it! Because, really, isn’t that the answer to our question?

Oh I love the prayer from Psalm 143. I sometimes do pray from the Psalms (Psalm 25:4-6 is my go to prayer), but have not remembered that this passage in 143 is also a prayer.

I used to pray from the psalms for my kids when they were little. They are adults now, but maybe I should get back to doing that! Thanks for reminding me about that. Blessings, Pastor Pete!

Good advice. It can be hard to determine what God is saying when we’re seeking guidance from Him.

Great Scriptures verses, Cindy! To answer your question … sometimes. Since I’m NOT Jesus, I can’t always do what He would do. (I don’t know people’s hearts, motives, etc. and I’m not God – thankfully!) But pursuing wisdom and submitting our minds to Him are important. When I honestly think I have the answer, I tell the Lord I’m going in that direction, and I ask Him to stop me if I’m wrong. (He has done that.)
