Monday’s Verse, 7/10/23

He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.  And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is.  Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?” Luke 12: 54-56 NIV Read full chapter

My Thoughts: Are we interpreting this present time? As Jan Markel likes to say, “Things are not falling apart. They are falling into place.”

Sunday’s Memory Verse, 7/9/23

Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 NIV

My Thoughts: We live in a time of great deception, but the Lord has given us the Bible, the source of all Truth.

Spiritual Discernment: Now What?

Discernment is scarce in the Church today. And people who lack discernment usually think they have it. But let’s say you are a person who has diligently studied the Bible, and you have honed the skill of discernment. You recognize false teaching when you hear it because you know the truth of God’s Word well.

Now what? How does one use that discernment in a Godly way? It isn’t as easy as it sounds. The following words from Hannah Anderson spoke to me as I contemplated this question.

“Discerning people use their insight to serve those around them…They use knowledge to build up and unify – not to tear down or create division…Sometimes this means having the patience to wait while others think through what you already know…Sometimes it means foregoing your preferences for the good of others. Sometimes it might even mean being misunderstood precisely because others can’t yet see what you do… They resist the temptation to flaunt knowledge or prove themselves right.”

Hannah Anderson

This calls for a meek and gentle spirit when correcting a fellow believer. This calls for love to be our motivating factor. It calls for putting the interests of others above our own.

I’m not suggesting that we compromise – not for a moment, not ever! I believe we have a responsibility to speak the truth, but you can’t make someone see what they don’t see. In fact, many times your next step is simply to pray for them. This is why it is so important to be led by the Holy Spirit in these matters.

Discernment is God’s call to intercession, never to faultfinding.

Corrie ten Boom

“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Philippians 2:3-4

I realize that this post is addressed to a very specific audience. But I think it is something we should all think about.

“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,” 1 Peter 3:15

What will you do if you discern error in your local church? Will you speak out or will you remain silent?

Verses for Meditation, 7/6/23

“Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.” 2 Timothy 2: 25-26 NIV (emphasis mine)

My thoughts: A kind, gentle spirit has the potential to awaken people and bring them to their senses. This is God’s way.

Quote of the Week, 7/5/23

Spiritual discernment is good for more than just making monumental decisions according to God’s will. It is an essential, day-to-day activity that allows thoughtful Christians to separate the truth of God from error and to distinguish right from wrong in all kinds of settings and situations. It is also a skill – something that any person can develop and improve…”

My copy of Tim Challies book, The Discipline of Spiritual Discernment is highlighted, starred, underlined, and frequently book-marked. It is one of the most important books in my library.

Monday’s Verse, 7/3/23

“What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.” 1 Corinthians 3:5-6 NIV (emphasis mine)

My Thoughts: Keep planting seeds. Ask God to make them grow.

Sunday’s Memory Verse, 7/2/23

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 NIV

My thoughts: The Bible puts great emphasis on the importance of Truth. We can always depend on God’s Word, even when we don’t understand. Man’s opinions, not so much.

The Woke Agenda: Don’t Be Uninformed

As the woke agenda gains ground, it will keep getting harder for Christians to stand for Biblical truth. It’s easier to be accepting and tolerant of sin, but it isn’t right.

I believe persecution in America (and the world) is only going to get worse. I am reminded of the verse that says,

“If you stumble in safe country, how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?” Jeremiah 12:5

When Jeremiah complained about persecution, the Lord responded by telling him that his current problems were nothing compared to what was coming!

That’s why I’m concerned about the Church in America. We’ve been spoiled by freedom. We don’t know what it’s like to be persecuted. We still reside in the “safe country”, but that is quickly changing. When real persecution comes, will we be able to stand?

Jesus said, “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:8

When the Lord comes, will He find compromise and tolerance of evil or will He find Christians trusting in the Word and in Truth?

Some have decided to ignore Scripture and go along with the lies. What lies? Well, everything that is happening in our world which is contrary to God’s Word is a lie. Do not be deceived.

We can bury our heads in the sand for a while, but when a problem threatens our children, we are compelled to face it head-on. And our children are being targeted by the Woke agenda.

They don’t even try to hide it. Drag Queens have invaded children’s Story Hour at Public Libraries and bookstores across America. Target is selling LGBTQ Pride clothes for kids. American Public Education promotes the trans agenda. Disney has gone off the rails. And to top it off, Gay Pride Parades chant, “We’re coming for your children!”

We must fight for our children’s welfare. If we do, it will encourage others to fight, too. If we remain silent, others will be afraid to speak out. There is a lot at stake.

I pray that for believers we will not diminish our witness for Christ because we do not want to face backlash from this unbelieving world.”

Mandy Sweigart-Quinn, Blue Collar Theologian

We don’t want to face backlash. I think that pretty much sums it up. We don’t want to face backlash so we remain quiet.

But consider this. I was stunned when a Christian friend of mine recently told me that 5 of her 7 young adult children were “woke”. She said they were homeschooled and/or sent to private schools, but she warned me, “That’s not enough.” Once they attended college, their worldview changed.

She also shared with me that she has a friend whose 3 kids have all rejected the faith. They are now leftists and atheists. They are “Preacher’s kids”, two of which changed their worldview in college.

Don’t underestimate the power of peer pressure and social media. Don’t think this can’t happen to your children because you live in a small town or in the “Bible Belt”. I assure you it can. And there are probably people you know who are dealing with these issues right now and you just don’t know about it.

The problem is real and it is having an effect on our children whether we realize it or not. You can read Mandy’s inspiring article, Smoke here.

May God lead you and guide you as you traverse the narrow road.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7: 13-14
