Overcoming Adversity to Become an Olympic Champion

A sense of excitement always surrounds the Olympics and 2024 is no different. I want to tell you a true story you may not know about a true Olympic champion.

In 1940, a little girl was born in St. Bethlehem, Tennesee. She was the 20th out of 22 children. She grew up in poverty. Their home had neither electricity nor indoor plumbing.

Her life was a struggle from birth. Born two months premature, she weighed only four and a half pounds, but her family had something special: a deep faith in Jesus Christ. She was taught that God had a purpose for her life.

As a young child, she was diagnosed with polio. Her family was told that she would never walk. But his young girl overcame polio to become an Olympic sprint champion! Her name: Wilma Rudolph.

In the 1960 Summer Olympics, her performance established her as one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century. She won three gold medals and broke at least three world records. Wilma Rudolph became the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field at the same Olympic games. Her performance also earned her the title of โ€œthe fastest woman in the world.โ€

Wilma says, โ€œWhen I was going through my transition of being famous, I asked God, why was I here? What was my purpose? Surely, it wasnโ€™t just to win three gold medals. There has to be more to this
life than that.โ€

She went on to make a difference in the lives of many people. A devoted Baptist, she joined evangelist Billy Graham‘s Baptist Christian Athletes tour in Japan. Over the years, Rudolph held various teaching positions. She dedicated her life to helping others. Her awards and honors are too numerous to list.

She explained her success, as follows:

My mother taught me very early to believe I could achieve any accomplishment I wanted to. The first was to walk without braces.” Wilma Rudolph

To achieve athletic excellence, Rudolph overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles, including poverty, racism, sexism, and a crippling bout with polio, proof that:

“God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 NASB

Trust the Lord. He has a purpose for YOUR life, too. Whatever obstacles you may face, God will get you through. What is God asking you to do?

“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6 NIV

Verses for Meditation, 7/25/24

“For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jewsย on behalf of Godโ€™s truth, so that the promisesย made to the patriarchs might be confirmedย and, moreover, that the Gentilesย might glorify Godย for his mercy.” Romans 15:8 NIV (emphasis mine)

Study Bible Notes: “Paul points out that Christ came first as a servant to His own people (Matt. 15:24). Paul may have done that to humble the haughty Gentiles in the Roman church.” (David Jeremiah)

Tuesday’s Verse, 7/23/24

“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV (emphasis mine)

Stand Up For The Truth

Condoning sin never helped a single sinner find healing. In fact, speaking truth is how we engage in spiritual warfare. It is how we fight the enemy. Standing for the truth isn’t always easy. Backing down from it only strengthens Satan’s grip on those in darkness.

Leading sinners to Christ is our mission, but isnโ€™t standing up for truth also our mission? The truth, found in God’s Word, isn’t popular today. But only truth will set the captive free.

I have little optimism that the world will embrace Christian values as it once did. In fact, things look more and more like the days of Noah. Only revival can change the trajectory we’re on.

“We are living in a time, in an era when there are people who are desperately wicked, and in desperate need of repentance and faith, in desperate need of the Gospel. And we’re being told that the wickedness is, in fact, the Gospel,” … such a worldview is destructive because it not only calls good evil and evil good, but also “alienates people from the only hope that they have.”

Voddie Baucham

Jesus prayed to His Father, saying, โ€œSanctify them by the truth; your word is truthโ€ NIV (John 17:17).

So yes! We can know what is true because the truth is found in God’s Word. We must love the truth more than we love what we want to be true.

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, โ€œIf you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.โ€ John 8:31-32 NIV Read full chapter

You can make a case for almost anything you want to be true. People do it all the time by taking verses out of context. If you are seeking truth, you won’t do that. Ask yourself, What is my motivation? Is it to prove my opinion is right, or to seek the truth?

The Bible is clear about what constitutes sin. We don’t have to wonder about it. God does this to keep us safe from the consequences of sin. Stop and think for a moment about the consequences of sexual perversion, adultery, transgender ideology, and abortion. There is nothing good to be found.

To stand in evil times, we must love truth. We can’t stand against evil if we compromise.

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist …”

Condoning sin never helped a single sinner find healing. Speak truth in love.
