Will God Heal My Broken Heart?

3-minute devotion for Friday, 11/28/25

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted…” Isaiah 61:1 ESV

Has something happened to you that you haven’t been able to recover from? Rejection, betrayal, loss, abuse, and trauma can be almost impossible to get over. Maybe you have been praying for God to heal your heart for a long time, and even though you have forgiven, the pain still refuses to dissipate.

In church recently, it occurred to me that this promise might not be answered in our lifetime, but only after we get to Heaven. (I don’t know why this never occurred to me before.) So I emailed my pastor and asked him what he thought. This was his response:

“I do think it’s possible for a broken heart not to be healed this side of Heaven, but I don’t think that should be cause for despair or giving up hope that such a healing will happen. I not only believe—but know—that God is able to “bind up the brokenhearted and set the captive free.” Pastor Jeff 

Then I went to GotQuestions.org, which I knew would give me pertinent scriptures and a Christian perspective. They said,

“God never failed one of His people when they cried out to Him, and He will not fail the heartbroken Christian who cries out to Him today. He may not always answer exactly in the way we would like, but He answers according to His perfect will and timing, and, while we are waiting for the answer, His grace is sufficient.” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

David, a man after God’s own heart, suffered many heartbreaking circumstances. Each time, he recovered and became an even stronger man of God. He was no stranger to betrayal.

He writes, “If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were raising himself against me, I could hide from him. But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend, with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship as we walked with the throng at the house of God.” (Psalm 55:12-14).

The closer the relationship, the greater the pain of betrayal. Take comfort in this:

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”   Psalm 34:18

Despite the pain, there is a way we can heal from betrayal. That power comes directly from God for those of us who put our hope in His unfailing love.

“…the Lord delights in those who fear him,
    who put their hope in his unfailing love.” Psalm 147:11

I put my hope in God’s unfailing love. Will you?

Think You Can’t Hang On?

Is your heart breaking? Are you in deep despair? Is depression crushing you? Even when you think you can’t hang on, God will hang on to you. No matter what life is throwing at you, no matter how weak your faith might be right now, God will hold you fast.

How do I know? I know because He has done this for me. It has been over 60 years since I asked Jesus to be my Savior. Through many trials, through many sorrows, through all my many failings, He never let me go.

He never said, “That’s it! I’m done with her. She’s gone too far now. Enough is enough!”

When I doubted, He held me fast. When I rebelled, He held me fast. When I went astray, He held me fast. When I was in deep despair, He held me fast. When my heart was broken, He held me fast. This is why I love Him and why I praise Him unashamedly.

It is when I acknowledge my own shortcomings, vulnerabilities, and weaknesses that I can grasp the depth of His great love and forgiveness and understand just how much I really need Him.

If you are searching for love, forgiveness, and mercy, come to Jesus. His love surpasses all understanding. He loves you, yes you.

“If I settle on the far side of the sea, even there … Your right hand will hold me fast.” (Psalm 139:10)

“Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:37-39)

“You are not your own;  you were bought at a price.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

“I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,  and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:16-19)

A Broken Heart

A friend of mine lost her husband in a motorcycle accident. He wasn’t racing. He wasn’t even speeding. He was riding in a charity event for abused children. It happened in front of her eyes. The man she loved, gone like that in a freak accident. How quickly our lives can change.

Many of us have experienced great loss, or we will at some time in the future. It has happened to me. How does anyone survive without the Lord? He is the only one who can comfort and heal our hearts.

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted … to comfort all who mourn …   ” Isaiah 61:1-2

A broken heart is like a giant wave,  drowning you in sadness and pain, but God’s word is a soothing salve that heals. Not only will God heal your broken heart, He will care for the wounds left behind. Healing may not happen overnight. It didn’t for me. Deep wounds heal over time, but they do heal. The Great Physician will bandage your wounds and heal your broken heart. Ask Him.

“Praise the Lord. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise Him …. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars, and calls them each by name. Great is our God and mighty in power, His understanding has no limit …. The Lord delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.”  Psalm 147:3-5 and 11)

He is able! He knows the number of stars and has called them all by name. How much more does He know every detail of your heartache! Sing praises to His name and put your trust in His unfailing love. I believe that praising Him and spending time in His presence delivers the soothing balm that heals. He is delighted when you put your hope in His love. Spend time with Him by prayer, studying His Word, and singing praises.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

“Cast your cares on the Lord, and He will sustain you..” Psalm 55:22

“The Lord is close to the broken-hearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”  Psalm 34:18

I pray for my friend that she may know the comfort that only He can provide.
