Understanding “Hallowed Be Thy Name”

1 minute read

Tuesday’s Verse, 1/21/25

“Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.” Matthew 6:9 AKJV

The meaning of this petition (Matthew 6:9) is, β€œLet thy name be celebrated, venerated, and esteemed as holy everywhere, and receive from all people proper honour.” It is thus the expression of a wish or desire, on the part of the worshipper, that the name of God, or that God himself, should be held everywhere in proper venerationAlbert Barnes.

The Assurance of Knowing God

1 minute read

Monday’s Verse, 1/20/25

“We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, β€œI know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.” 1 John 2:3-6 NIV Read full chapter

Note: There is only one way of proving to ourselves that we know God, and that is by loving obedience to His will. (Cambridge Bible)

Advocacy for Orphans and the Oppressed

Sunday, 1/19/25

“Learn to do good;
Seek justice,
Rebuke the oppressor,
Obtain justice for the orphan,
Plead for the widow’s case.” Isaiah 1:17 NASB Read full chapter

Note: Justice for the orphanΒ (Cheyne); see that he is not wronged – be his champion.Β Plead for the widow;Β i.e.Β plead her cause in the courts… lean towards her, as if her advocate. The widow and the orphan were taken under God’s special protection from the time of Moses, and constantly commended to the tender care of the righteousΒ (Pulpit Commentary)

Friday’s Verse, 1/17/25

“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said,Β β€œIf you hold to my teaching,Β you are really my disciples.Β Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 NIV Read full chapter

Comment: In our world today, people disagree about what is True. But there is a way to find Truth. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.

Cleansed From a Guilty Conscience

Verses for Meditation, 1/16/25

“Let us draw near to GodΒ with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings,Β having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscienceΒ and having our bodies washed with pure water.Β Let us hold unswervingly to the hopeΒ we profess,Β for he who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:22-23 NIV

Note: Our hope is so certain that the author previously calls it our anchor (6:19). Blood was sprinkled at Mount Sinai on the priests and even on the people. Under the New Covenant, people’s hearts are inwardly sprinkled with Christ’s blood to cleanse them from a guilty conscience when they come to faith. (Jeremiah Study Bible)

The Power of Loving Actions

Quote of the Week, 1/15/25

β€œDo not waste time bothering whether you β€˜love’ your neighbor,” C.S. Lewis advises, but rather β€œact as if you did. As soon as we do this we find one of the great secrets: when you are behaving as if you loved someone, you will presently come to love them.”

from How to Forgive the Unforgiveable, By Mitch Teemley

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: β€˜Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31 NIV

Hospitality in Christian Life

Tuesday’s Verse, 1/14/25

“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers,Β for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” Hebrews 13:2 NIV

Note: Historically, the early Christians were known for their hospitality, often opening their homes to fellow believers and travelers. This was not just a social nicety but a vital part of their witness and community life. (Berean Study Bible)

Confidence in Prayer

Sunday’s Memory Verse, 1/12/25

“Therefore let’s approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need.” Hebrews 4:16 NASB

Note: God’s people do not need to fear being turned away, so they never need to hide or omit anything from their prayers. God gives mercy for past failures and grace for present needs. (Jeremiah Study Bible)
