Let Your Light Shine

Sunday’s Memory Verse for 7/13/25

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel … Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 KJV

Satan’s Big Lie

When you are dealing with grief, suffering, or pain, Jesus can relate to you in a very personal way. He has experienced it himself. He understands your hurt. Let Him comfort you.

Who is this great Comforter? God calls Him, “my righteous servant“. (Isaiah 53:11)

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.” Isaiah 53:3

********************

Did you know that the Lord can set you free in an instant, just like that? That’s what happened to me. After years of believing a lie, I am finally free. What was Satan’s strategy to defeat me?

It was getting me to think that the “one thing” I couldn’t have was what I needed to be happy.

You would think I could have figured that out, but I didn’t, not until the Lord revealed it to me Himself.

After a time of prayer, I’m not sure why, but I decided to look up Charles Stanley on YouTube. I had heard of him, but had never listened to one of his sermons, and someone had mentioned him at my Bible Study the day before.

I picked a sermon called, “Satan’s Strategy to Defeat Us.” Totally unaware of what was about to happen, I listened to the sermon. Have you ever experienced this? In a sermon, the minister says one specific thing and you know God is speaking directly to you. You almost want to slyly glance around and see if everyone is looking at you!

That’s what happened to me that day. Dr. Stanley said that if you are hungry, angry, lonely or tired, that’s when you are vulnerable for a Satanic attack. My ears perked up. Then, Dr. Stanley explained that Satan’s strategy was to make you want the one thing you can’t have. I knew God had led me to this sermon. It was no accident.

Remember what happened to Adam and Eve? Satan got them to believe that they needed the one thing they couldn’t have. There was only one thing they couldn’t have: fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden. I have a feeling that fruit looked a lot tastier than it actually was. (Is it possible that we magnify that “one thing” and make it bigger and better than it really is?)

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me and I ate.” (Genesis 3:13)

Satan is still deceiving people with that same lie. He will make you think that to be happy, you need the one thing you can’t have. That is a lie. There is no “one thing” you need to be happy, except the Lord Jesus Christ.

On the same day, I just happened to be on Isaiah 54 in my daily reading plan.

“For your Maker is your husband—
the Lord Almighty is his name—
the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer;
he is called the God of all the earth.” Isaiah 54:5 NIV

“Though the mountains be shaken
    and the hills be removed,
yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken
nor my covenant of peace be removed,”
says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” Isaiah 54:10 NIV

The “one thing” you think you need to be happy could be any number of things: a baby, a spouse, or a home. Fill in the blank. But that is Satan’s strategy to defeat you. Don’t believe it. You are not condemned to a life of sadness, ever!

And, if you hear someone say, “The Lord is all I need”, those words might mean more than you ever imagined. There might be a story that brought her to that realization and now she can say with confidence,

“You may never know that Jesus is all you need, until Jesus is all you have.”

The Call to Make Disciples

1-minute devotion for Friday, 7/11/25

Jesus said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 (emphasis mine)

Making a disciple is more than leading someone in the sinner’s prayer. It includes teaching and supporting them in their faith. Making a disciple is a tall order and not one that someone can easily accomplish alone. The Church must work together, each one doing his part. We must ask ourselves: Am I doing my part?

The Truth About Declarations: Biblical vs New Age Views

1-minute read for Friday, 7/10/25

“Who can speak and have it happen
if the Lord has not decreed it?” Lamentations 3:37 NIV

Although some view declarations as a way to manifest desired outcomes, that’s not what the Bible teaches us. They say, “Start building your faith today by speaking these declarations of faith for your finances, healing and relationships.”

The concept of making declarations, particularly affirmations and decrees, is strongly associated with New Age spirituality.

But as the verse above says, we cannot speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it.

Embrace Truth: 1-Minute Meditation for Tuesday

1-minute meditation for Tuesday, 7/8/25

“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” John 18:37

Trust in Jesus: The Source of Lasting Peace

1-minute read for Monday, 7/7/25

Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NIV

Comments: Even when trouble is all around us, we can still have peace. Peace comes through Christ, not the world. May we put our trust in Him alone.

Finding Joy in Trials

Sunday’s Memory Verse, 7/6/25

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4

Comments: We like to think of ourselves as mature Christians. Or, at least we want to be one. This is how that happens: Trusting God and what He has said in times of difficulty.

What True Discipleship Really Means

Many churches have shifted their focus from loving God and loving others to a “me-centered gospel.” That is sure to attract the world and naive believers. After all, humans are naturally self-centered.

“There is nothing more irreligious than self-absorbed religion.”
― J.I. Packer

“The me-centered gospel makes a subtle shift at its foundation about what—rather, who—is at the center of the gospel message. Well, it seems subtle. It’s actually a fundamental, seismic relocation. Jesus is removed from the center and is replaced by…you.” Jim Thomson, Pastor and Missionary, from his book Leadership on the Brink

You will see this from churches that advertise Your Best Life Now and teach that God wants you to financially prosper. In other words, it’s all about what God can do for me as if He is some kind of Genie in the sky. But this is in direct opposition to what Jesus said. In Luke 14, Jesus explains what it means to become His disciple. For many years, I skipped over these verses thinking they were too difficult to understand. Let’s examine them now.

26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’

31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.

34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.”

“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.” Luke 14:26-35

In other words, we must make Christ our first priority, even over family, wealth, and even our own life. Being a disciple is not about what we can get if we say a sinner’s prayer. It’s about being willing to give all to Him.

Some Examples to Consider:

(vs. 26) Did you know that when a Muslim follows Jesus, his family will reject him or may even kill him? When Jesus said, “hate your father and mother” He means that He is above everyone, even family. Nabeel Qureshi describes his experience when he converted from Islam to Christianity in his book, Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus. Nabeel’s mother and father, whom he respected and loved were devastated by his conversion. For the first time, I understood this verse.

(vs. 27) Many of the original disciples lost their lives, being crucified for their faith. Even today, many Christians are persecuted around the world and are viciously slaughtered. In 2023, 8,000 Christians were massacred in Nigeria! When you are robbed, beaten, and murdered for your faith in Jesus – that’s Christian persecution! You may not hear about it in the news, but it happens much more than you think.

(vs. 33) This does not mean we must become penniless, but we must hold all that we have with open hands, willing to give what the Lord asks us to give.

Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23

Freedom in Christ

1-minute devotion for July 4, 2025

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 Read full chapter

“When the Galatians trusted Christ, they were freed from the law’s yoke of slavery – in which people try to gain God’s favor by carefully heeding His rules… It seems our default position is to try to work our way to salvation… We are saved by grace through faith” (and not by works!)
