Is Satan Trying to Discourage You?

One of Satan’s favorite weapons is discouragement. I get discouraged sometimes, but the Lord always picks me back up. Sometimes encouragement comes through another person who is walking closely with God. This happened recently when I read Devotional Treasures by Alan Kearns. You can read it here.

Alan said, “It is not our ability that matters, but rather the Might of our Father God.” That hit me right between the eyes!

The Lord was showing me that if I have doubts and fears about my ministry (and we all have a ministry, you know) it’s because I’m taking all the responsibility on myself instead of depending on Him and trusting Him to accomplish His will. He has promised,

 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Psalm 32:8 NIV

Satan likes to attack our minds, making us think his lies are true. Doubts, fears, frustrations, distractions, and even fatigue may be the attack of the enemy. The following verses show us that the enemy attacks our minds.

“But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 11:3 ESV

“In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” 2 Corinthians 4:4 ESV

I love the story of Nehemiah and how he led the exiles back to Jerusalem where they were obeying God and rebuilding the demolished walls of the city. You can read about it in Nehemiah, chapters 4-6 here.

These chapters reveal how the enemy tried to stop the work God had given them to do: rebuilding the walls. So don’t be surprised if the enemy tries to stop the work God has given YOU to do!

Nehemiah and the Rebuilding of the Wall

Whether you are writing a blog, teaching a Bible Study, going to the mission field, pastoring a church, working in the nursery, or building a wall, the enemy’s plan is, first and foremost, to STOP THE WORK.

Satan’s plan is to make you give up!

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9 NIV

If we depend on our own abilities and strength we will fail. Consider the words of the Apostle Paul.

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9-11 NIV (emphasis mine)

Be strong in the Lord!

Verse for Meditation, 6/20/24

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 KJV

An old minister once said, “It’s not what you say, but what you do and who you are that makes the impact.”

Yes, we are to be holy and turn away from sinful desires. That’s true. But is that what he’s talking about? I think he’s talking about loving your neighbor.

Quote of the Week, 6/19/24

As Christians, we are called to uphold the principles of justice, compassion, and truth. We must navigate these complex issues with discernment, rejecting the allure of divisive rhetoric and standing firm against antisemitism in all its forms. In the face of this challenge, may the Church be guided by the power of the Holy Spirit to champion the cause of truth and support the Jewish people amidst the satanic onslaught of antisemitism.

Tuesday’s Verse, 6/18/24

“Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.  And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Hebrews 13:15-16 NIV

Monday’s Verse, 6/17/24

“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14 NIV

“An Idol Cast in the Image of Culture”

Certain behaviors people used to call sin have now become acceptable by liberal, progressive churches. These churches focus on God’s love and refuse to condemn what the Bible calls sin. But God does not change.

Jesus said, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14 NIV

Do you remember the Golden Calf that Aaron made while Moses was away on the mountain? Aaron’s golden calf represented a mixture of the true God and pagan methods of worship. Aaron wasn’t giving them a new god. He created an image of God the people wanted. Sound familiar? Don’t some do this even today?

“When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”

Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.”  So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron.  He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.”  So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings.” Exodus 32:1-6a NIV

Aaron gave the people the image of God that they desired, one more like the pagan nations around them. Then they used it to worship God. This didn’t end well. (Read the rest of the chapter!)

An idol is any created image of God that does not align with the Word of God. The Bible warns us many times about the danger of idols. Below are a few examples:

“What good is an idol carved by man, or a cast image that deceives you? How foolish to trust in your own creation!” Habakkuk 2:18 NLT (emphasis mine)

As our culture continues to drift away from Judeo/ Christian values some are advocating for compromise. As a result, some “Christians” support sinful behaviors such as abortion, gay marriage, and transgender ideology.

The thinking is that if we don’t compromise we will not be able to reach the lost. The theory is that if unbelievers are offended they will turn deaf ears to the Gospel. This faulty thinking may be more widespread than you think.

The problem is this: Only TRUTH will set the captive free. Jesus said that. (John 8:31-32) Our image of God must be that found in the Scriptures alone.

“Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.” 1 John 5:21 NIV
