God stretches the northern sky over empty space
    and hangs the earth on nothing.

Jesus’ Letters to the Churches

1-Minute Devotion for Tuesday, 7/14/26

Nothing could be more relevant to the Church today than the message from Jesus to the seven churches in the book of Revelation. These letters reveal which things He approves of and which things they must repent of. (Revelation, chapters 2 and 3)

These letters are important. And they are just as applicable now as they were then. Jesus tells them they must repent or He will remove their lampstand!

“When the Bible repeats something, it should catch our attention. In Revelation 2 and 3, there is a phrase that is repeated seven times: “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” In other words, this message is for everyone. God wants every Christian to study prophecy.” David Jeremiah

Transform Your Morning

1-Minute Devotion for Sunday, 7/12/26

The first thing I do every morning is to read and study my Bible. (Well, after I feed and walk Henry, my Yorkie. As you know, he is very bossy.)

When we get back, he gets in his dog bed and sleeps for a couple of hours. And I open my Bible.

This is my favorite time of the day. Do you know why? It’s because the Bible speaks to me every day, and so it becomes more dear to me every time I read it.

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” Hebrews 4:12-13 NIV (emphasis mine)

No other book in the world can do that, only the Bible. The word translated as “alive” is the Greek word zao. It is the same word Jesus used when He said,

“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4 NIV (emphasis mine)

Scripture is life-giving, not merely instructive, because the Bible is God speaking to you and me.

The Babylonian Exile: Fitting the Pieces Together

This post was first published in 2022 and continues to be viewed frequently even today.

You are probably familiar with the stories of Queen Esther, Nehemiah rebuilding the wall, Daniel in the lions’ den, King Nebuchadnezzar, and other Old Testament figures. But how do these stories relate to each other?

The story of the Jews who were exiled to Babylon and then returned to Jerusalem can be confusing. At least it was to me. I had a lot of pieces to the puzzle, but I didn’t know how they fit together. So I did a little research and came up with a timeline and a summary that can help us fit the pieces together.

In order to get a better grasp of the timeline, I have renamed the years. I have called 606 BC (the date the first exiles were taken to Babylon) Year 1. You will see that 161 years will pass before the third wave of exiles returns to Jerusalem.

Babylonian Exile Timeline

606 BC (Year 1)   Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, besieges Jerusalem. Daniel and Judean nobles are exiled to Babylon.

586 BC (Year 20) Jerusalem is destroyed by the Babylonians. Solomon’s Temple is destroyed.

539 BC (Year 67) Cyrus, King of Persia, conquers the Babylonian Empire

537 BC (Year 69) The 1st group of exiles returns to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel. 42,360 exiles return (plus slaves and singers) – a small remnant.

520 BC (Year 86) The Temple is completed.

486-465 BC (Years 120-141) Xerxes is King of Persia. He makes Esther the new queen.

458 BC (Year 148) The 2nd group of exiles returns to Jerusalem with Ezra. Artaxerxes is the King of Persia. Only 1,754 exiles return. *Including women and children, the total number would be about 7,000 to 8,000. (Jeremiah Study Bible Notes)

445 BC (Year 161) The 3rd group of exiles returns with Nehemiah to restore the walls. The walls were restored in 52 days.

 Summary

In 606 BC, the deportation of Judean nobles to Babylon begins. This group included Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. The people of Judah were not exiled all at once but were taken captive over a period of several years. Twenty years after the first captives were taken, Jerusalem and the Temple were completely destroyed by the Babylonians.

Sixty-seven years after the first exiles were taken to Babylon, Cyrus, King of Persia, conquered the Babylonian empire. Only two years after he became king, he allowed the exiles to return to Jerusalem. A small remnant of 42,360 people returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel to rebuild the Temple.

First, they rebuilt the altar. Then they began to rebuild the temple, but opposition stopped the building for about 16 years. Rebuked and encouraged by the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, the people finally completed the construction of the Temple.

About 79 years after the first group of exiles returned to Jerusalem, a second group returned with Ezra, the priest. Only 1,754 returned this time. (Including women and children would increase that number to 7,000 to 8,000.) The new Persian King is Artaxerxes, son of Xerxes and Vashti. Vashti was the queen before Esther.

Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, the Israelites have taken foreign wives. Ezra leads the people to cry out for forgiveness and mercy. They turned from their wicked ways.

Thirteen years after the second wave of exiles returned, the third wave of exiles returned with Nehemiah. Nehemiah’s mission was to restore the walls and gates. They accomplished this in 52 days. It had been 161 years since the first group of captives was taken to Babylon!

Many, if not most, Christians study books by well-known “Christian authors” and call it a Bible Study. I beg to differ. That would be a book study. Some of the most popular “Christian” books are filled with errors. A Bible Study group studies the Bible, not books about the Bible.

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 NIV

Embrace Truth

The Old and New Testaments both affirm that the words recorded in the Bible are God’s words and that they are true. There are over 100 verses that affirm this. We thank God for this precious gift, the Bible!

Is the Church Transforming Lives?

“Religion today is not transforming people; rather it is being transformed by the people. It is not raising the moral level of society; it is descending to society’s own level, and congratulating itself that it has scored a victory because society is smilingly accepting its surrender.”

It might surprise you to learn that these words were written by AW Tozer in 1955, over 70 years ago! This is called Progressive Christianity, which (in a nutshell) adopts modern cultural values at the expense of biblical authority, including the advancement of LGBTQ+ propaganda.

I am not surprised by this because, after all, hasn’t this always been the way the devil works? In the Garden of Eden, the serpent tempted Eve to sin. How? He said,

“Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,  but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. Genesis 3:1-3

This trick is as old as dirt! And it is often the exact way the devil tempts us! He leads us to believe that sin is not really sin, even though the Word of God clearly says it is. For example, the Bible clearly says that homosexual behavior is sin, but many churches ignore this truth to the detriment of those in bondage to it.

“God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.” Romans 1:26-27 Read Romans 1.

The Bible says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2 NIV

The Bible says, “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be … lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5

If we ignore God’s Word and support worldly wisdom, we are denying the power of God to save.

“For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been set free from sin… 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness”. Romans 6

This is why we must love the truth. God’s Word is truth.

It is not loving to suppress truth and go along with the devil’s lies. It is cowardice.

You won’t find the worldly media telling stories about people who have been set free from homosexuality, but there are many. You just have to look for them. Google it!

From NAR to Truth: How God Changed My Thinking

As a young adult, I felt like my church was dead, and I longed to be around Christians who were excited about knowing Jesus. I was drawn to the emotional, enthusiastic praise and worship I found in a NAR/Word of Faith church.

This is how easily a new Christian, or anyone not grounded in God’s Word, can get caught up in error. That’s why pastors and teachers must teach the flock about false teachers and false prophets.

Many Christians think that when you have God’s Holy Spirit within you, He will keep you from accepting error, but this is not always the case, as when Paul had to correct Peter (Galatians 2:11-21).

The NAR movement often introduces new apostles, prophets, and ongoing new revelation, leading to a disregard for the sufficiency of Scripture. Extra-biblical revelations often take precedence over the written Word. In fact, the sermons of these false teachers are often based more on the words of their “prophets” than on the Word of God.

For example, sermons may focus on “the coming revival”, “the 7 Mountain Mandate”, or “prosperity and wealth”, none of which can be found in the Bible.

“However, a strong Biblical foundation enables believers to discern true spirituality from practices that may lack a solid Scriptural basis.” Bruce Cooper

An overemphasis on emotional experiences can overshadow the need for diligent study and accurate interpretation of Scripture. Verses are frequently taken out of context to support erroneous teaching.

These movements erode faith, trust, and dependency on the authority of God’s Holy Word by emphasizing personal experiences and extrabiblical revelations. Therefore, it is crucial that believers maintain a strong, unwavering commitment to the study of God’s Word, making it the foundation of their faith.

After a while, I started to see contradictions in what was being taught and what the Bible said. For example, my church focused on the “prosperity gospel”, which teaches that God wants to make you rich. I started to question this. I thought, ” Is that something the Bible emphasizes? 1 Timothy 6 often came to mind.

“If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” 1 Timothy 6:3-10 NIV

So, how did God change my thinking? He drew me to His Word, the Holy Bible, and showed me Truth. It’s really that simple. It took time, but I went from being enthusiastically convinced that these false teachings were true, to questioning some things, to being set free!

Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 NIV

Overcoming Anxiety with Faith and Prayer

A Personal Testimony for Sunday, 6/7/26

One side effect of trauma is severe anxiety. That anxiety may vary in severity, sometimes controllable, sometimes out of your control.

Recently, I had to pick up my daughter, her husband, and her baby at the Nashville International Airport. The airport has changed a lot since the last time I picked someone up at arrivals.

They had moved the Cell Phone Waiting Area, and I couldn’t find it. Lost in heavy city traffic, I became extremely anxious. Not ordinary anxiety, but intense anxiety where your heart starts beating rapidly, and fear threatens to control your thoughts.

Immediately, I remembered Philippians 4:6-7.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

I started to sing the message of this Scripture to the tune of How Great Thou Art. Start the music!

🎶 Oh Lord, My God, I will not be anxious.

For I will pray, and offer up my praise.

With heartfelt thanks, I turn to You, my Savior.

And the peace of God

Will guard my heart and mind.

This peace You give

Transcends all understanding.

It stills my thoughts and heals my anxious soul.

I don’t know how I came up with this idea. It just popped into my mind, which could only be attributed to the grace of our faithful God, who knows how to rescue His children in times of need. I calmed down, and the next thing I knew, I had my daughter and her precious family in the car, and we were headed to my home!
