Overcoming Depression

1-Minute Devotion for Sunday, 10/18/26

One day recently, depression hit me hard. It was the kind of depression that was almost overwhelming. Was it a spiritual attack? I think it was. But the Holy Spirit reminded me of King David’s prayer when he was discouraged and depressed.

“But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.” Psalm 3:3 KJV Read full chapter

King David’s prideful son, Absalom, exalted himself before the people of Israel and proclaimed himself king. King David and his officials were forced to flee for their lives. (2 Samuel 15-17)

David loved his son, Absalom. Can you imagine how depressing that would be? David looked to the Lord, the lifter of his head, and God strengthened him. He will do the same for you and for me.

  1. Psalm 3:3 is one of my favorites. I’ve memorized it, and say it often—especially when I feel spiritually attacked.
As for David and Absalom, families can break and even fall apart. That’s why trusting in the Lord—above all else—is vital. His anchor holds!
I’m glad God brought you through, Cindy. Thank you, Lord. 🙏

  2. Thank you for sharing this, Cindy, and for being so honest about a hard day. Psalm 3:3 has always been one of my favorites, and “the lifter up of mine head” is such a comforting picture. It’s encouraging to be reminded that even David, in the middle of heartbreak over his own son, turned to the Lord and was strengthened. Blessings to you today.

  3. I’m so thankful Scripture reiterates time and time again that He indeed is near to the brokenhearted. By free-will we lean in to His goodness (by Word, prayer, accountability partners) even if we feel emotionally, physically, or spiritually downcast (perhaps even barely able) but we do the right action regardless….and by His sweet mercy and grace very soon we witness our heart catching up in pace!!!❤️

  4. Praying for you my dear friend and sister 🙏
I love Psalm 3:3, but in the NASB: “But You, O LORD, are a shield about me,
My glory, and the One who lifts my head.” It is comforting to be surrounded by Father God – this verse is cross-referenced to other verses about being surrounded by Him. May our Father God gather you into His arms today. 🙏

  5. God knows how much effort you put into sharing His Word with unbelievers and making them aware of His invitation in John 3:16. That may be a reason for a spiritual attack. And then having a sad day on top of that would be hard to bear without the Lord “lifting your head.” I pray you have a good week, Cindy.
