“Ignorance of the Word of God is the ‘greatest sin’ because it leads to all other spiritual failures.” J. Vernon McGee

These statements are just as true today as they were when Dr. McGee said them. Ignorance of God’s Word results in a lack of discernment. And that is why we see so many false teachers with huge followings, leading people astray.

In 1967, J. Vernon McGee began broadcasting the Thru the Bible radio program (TTB), in a systematic study of each book of the Bible. His teaching often emphasized the importance of personal Bible study.

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 NASB

Nowhere in the Bible are pastors told to avoid controversial subjects. They must teach the whole counsel of God’s Word, not just the feel-good parts.

  1. Thanks, Cindy, for emphasizing the need to overcome this sin. So many resources, yet too many don’t set aside the time to read or listen. I love Christian fiction that adds scripture, encouraging me to learn more. It’s like a springboard to dig deeper into the Word of God, which J. Vernon McGee emphasized we need to do.

    1. The Word of God is too valuable to sit on a shelf collecting dust. It is worth more than silver and gold! I’m thankful that my pastor has encouraged us to use a Bible reading plan to read the Bible in a year. He has done this for 4 or 5 years now. Blessings, Grant!

  5. Thank you, precious Cindy! I love J Vernon McGee! It’s so hard when we see others being “led” down a path that isn’t true. A dear friend and I have a situation right now in which the word “Discipleship” (talk about a huge topic!) can become very self-centered if not careful. The truth will hurt at times. But ignoring the truth is deadly and costly. Sending you and Henry so much love and prayers always. 🐾🙏🏻❣️

    1. Karla, Yes, ignoring the truth is deadly. The Bible says, “They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.” (2 Thessalonians 2:10

      1. Amen, Cindy. We feel your love. I’m so humbled by Christ, Cindy. Each day, when I begin surrendering and going to the Word, I ask Him to show me the truth. With prayer and discernment, I block all things that do not speak to His Word. It’s a LOUD and Noisy world. I’m not shocked at those who don’t understand the New Covenant and what being a disciple means. “It is no longer I that live, …but Christ in ME.” I have to die to myself and my flesh. It can be a lonely road. But I’d rather have Jesus than anything. God bless you so much. Finn and I will be moving on Friday and Satuday. I’ll try to get the internet working as soon as possible. A former pastor and friends are coming to help. I’m so thankful to God for that. Tonight another friend is coming to help me finish packing up my kitchen.

  6. Excellent points, Cindy. When I think how many Bibles in America are sitting on the shelf or in a box somewhere, while people in other parts of the world are paying thousands of dollars and risking imprisonment to get one … yes, I do think it’s a sin of omission, and one that sets us up for being deceived. We hear a lot of verses quoted independently, but an evil or ignorant person could take one verse and build a whole cult around it. The cardinal rule in Bible study: “context-Context-CONTEXT!”

  8. Good message Cindy. And I so agree about personal Bible study and knowing the word to protect from falling prey to false teaching. And I also agree with the point that all of the Bible should be preached, the difficult parts should not be skipped.
