Stork Migration in Israel: A Spring Spectacle

Spring has unofficially arrived in Israel!

The first flock of storks stopped at the Hula small lake (Agmon) for a night’s rest. Approximately 600,000 storks will pass over the skies of Israel in the coming weeks! (Amir Tsarfati, Behold Israel)

“There the birds make their nests;
the stork has its home in the junipers.” Psalm 104:17 NIV

Both parents regurgitate water over the chicks to cool them off in the heat of the day. This is often accompanied by one of the parents extending one or two wings to block the sun and create shade for the young chicks, sometimes for hours.

Storks are mentioned in the Bible five times. The Hebrew word for “stork” is Hasidah and is related to the word hesed, which is the main term for the kindness, love, mercy, and goodness of Yahweh, the God of Israel. The stork is remarkable for its tender care, not only for its young but also for the aged.

As the hundreds of thousands of storks arrive in Israel, may she be reminded of God’s great love for His people!

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NIV

  1. This is amazing! And I never knew about the comparison between the Hebrew word for stork and the word Hesed. God’s detail in every area is astounding and precious! Thank you for writing about this, Cindy!

  2. Hello from Susan A Moskalets
I heard that’s the storks come on their “appointed time” (moed) during the month of Passover and leaving exactly six months later during Tabernacles/Sukkot.. Sometimes they come in March and Sometimes in April always
corresponding with the Passover month, when
    The Barley is in Abib.

It is a second witness to the correct timing of God’s festivals, and the Biblically correct 1st day of the year.
For example in 2021, I know among some of my friends they believe the barley wasn’t ready, in Israel, until April and kept Tabernacles in October. But the videos that I saw a showed there was enough barley ready in March to call that the correct new moon for the first month of the year. We kept also Tabernacles/Sukkot in September that year. That is the month that the storks left. Do you have any scientific proof of this? I would really love it.
    Jeremiah 8:7 KJV
“Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times (moed) ; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.”
I read a scientific study some years ago online showing that the stork migration (arrival in Israel) always corresponds with the barley being in Abib each spring.
I can’t find that study now but I wish I would have saved it.
    Thank you so much.
This was an excellent, & very enjoyable article, of yours.

    1. I am glad you enjoyed the article. I wrote this when I first heard about the stork migration in Israel from Amir Tsarfati, an Israeli Jew whose Telegram channel I follow. It is an amazing event that I would love to see with my own eyes! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. God bless you, Susan!
