Would You Lay Down Your Life for a Friend?

The Hiding Place, by Corrie ten Boom, greatly impacted my life. If you haven’t read it, you must obtain a copy for your library and read about how she showed God’s love for others by hiding Jews in her home during WWII. Here is a passage from the book.

"Would you be willing to take a Jewish mother and her baby into your home?"

Color drained from the man's face. He took a step back from me. "Miss ten Boom! I do hope you're not involved with any of this illegal concealment ... It's just not safe! Think of your father!"

I pulled the coverlet back from the baby's face. The man bent forward, his hand in spite of himself reaching for the tiny fist curled around the blanket. For a moment I saw compassion and fear struggle in his face. Then he straightened. "No. Definitely not. We could lose our lives for that Jewish child!"

Unseen by either of us, Father had appeared in the doorway. "Give the child to me, Corrie," he said.

Father held the baby close, his white beard brushing its cheek, looking into the little face with eyes as blue and innocent as the baby's ... "You say we could lose our lives for this child. I would consider that the greatest honor that could come to my family."

What makes someone literally risk their life for another like Corrie, her sister Betsy, and their father did? All three of them were eventually caught and taken to a prison camp by the Gestapo where Corrie’s father died. Corrie and her sister were eventually taken to Ravensbruck Concentration Camp where Betsy died from maltreatment.

The terrorist attack on Israel on October 7 was the most shocking example of anti-semitism since the Holocaust. Today, anti-semitism is worse than it’s ever been since Hitler’s reign of terror. What will happen next? What will Christians be willing to do? What would you be willing to do?

Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13

In His Love, Cindy

  1. Like you this book greatly impact my life. It helped me also during street ministry, one would be amazed at what one sees on the streets. Again Jews are proof there is a God because the enemy of our souls have tried to wipe them out so many times and the God of the Bible would not allow it. As you put in your post pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

      1. God took a naive young lady and showed me His protective power. The mentors at the time thought it was a good way for me to learn how to deal with my own childhood issues that resulted in a lot of anger and bitterness. I was a coward, except when I got mad or bullied. Then I was like a bull in the china shop. All zeal and no wisdom. I was the kind that would pin someone to the wall and tell they they had an option, get saved or get punched. Rather a dumb thing to do when the other guy was armed, and I was not. But years later I heard stories that made me realize just how much God loved me.

The mentor told me that some of the people I was kind of ruff with, well they saw things that made them realize I was not alone. Several times these gang member told the people in charge that it was not me but the men who were around me that got their attention. It was just me, no men, until I realize God sent angels I could not see, but those I was trying to reach did. It was then I realized God allowed a messed up young woman to do His work, in spite of me and no matter how much I messed up, He was there. It is something that I try to never forget.

In time I learned to receive more of God’s love to heal my heart and change my ways. God makes Himself known in ways we cannot imagine if we are open and willing to receive it. Sometimes on long days it is hard to remember that and I turn back to Him and see His hands outstretched.

There is a short book on my website “PDF of Mrs J’s story” in the side bar. There was another book but the college published it under their name and I lost the rights to it. Another thing I had to learn about.

        Blessings to you

        1. Eileen, Thank you for sharing your amazing testimony. Have you heard about what happened to Jim Elliot. The warriors who killed him and 3 other missionaries also saw angels. You can read about it at https://ptv.org/devotional/angels-minister-to-us/
I couldn’t find Mrs.J’s story on your website. Can you send me a link to it? I would love to read more about you.
Yes, God can heal our hearts and change our ways. That’s for sure! He did it for me, too.
Would you give me permission to share what you wrote in your comment on my blog?
God bless you and yours, Eileen! 🙏✞😇

          1. Sorry, yes I have read Jim Elliot’s and the other with him as well as their families’ stories. I use to get voice of the martyrs as well as the guy that was from New York who worked with gangs, cannot remember his name at the moment. In our state the larger cities had a lot of gangs and churches would ask for volunteers. They helped many volunteers overcome many issues yet still worked the streets. It was a great time of learning the gospel street wise.
