My Life Is In God’s Hands

On September 11, 2001, Pilot Steve Scheibner was packed and ready to fly out of Boston on American Airlines Flight 11 to Los Angeles.  But at the last minute, another pilot, First Officer Thomas McGuinness, was assigned the flight instead.

Imagine the emotional impact on Scheibner when he realized that the plane he should have been flying, had just flown into the World Trade Center’s North Tower. Had God spared his life?

The Bible says our lives are not our own. Consider these Scriptures.

“Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.”  Jeremiah 10:23,

“But I trust in you, Lord;  I say, “You are my God. My times are in your hands…” Psalm 31:14 & 15

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21

If you ever survived something that you know you shouldn’t have survived, you may feel the same way as Steve Scheibner. You may understand that you are here because God has more for you to do.

There were other passengers who missed flight 11 that day. Some changed their plans at the last minute. Others just didn’t get to the airport in time. Were they forever changed? Did they find their purpose?

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

When we stand before our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, may we hear these coveted words, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Matthew 25:23

  4. Your words and that video reached deep into my soul this morning. I’ve been wrestling with God lately (Yeah, ask me how that’s going ha ha) That it all begins recognizing His incredible love and sacrifice for us, everything else in life will naturally become secondary when that Truth makes it to the heart level. Thank you so much for your ministry, I love your blog!

  5. Beautiful post. The truth is Gods plan always prevails. God bless those He protected in the most of travesty, but I would like to add that I pray all those who had perish, be with God in His house. With the pilot included. Sometimes we can’t see the big picture, but God is in the details. Amen for this post!

  6. It is God’s painting, God’s creation, God’s will. John 12.40 “He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.”
    We are called to obedience. The life of a man is in God’s hands, but God uses people to His purposes. Jesus preached to the pharisees as well as to the others.
    Sometimes I get confused by all this, but God assures me He has it all in hand.

  7. There was an account of a woman (I believe the NY Times) who worked in one of the twin towers that was late for work that morning. She missed her subway ride into the city. Why? She decided at the last minute to wear a different pair of shoes to work.

    Having only one of the shoes, she searched her home to find the matching one. The delay caused her not to be at her office when the planes struck.

    Small things. Simple things. We get irritated, frustrated and frayed in life because of the trivial things that do not go “our way”. But, one millisecond can be the difference between life and death.

    God knows all, even all about the “little things”. Thank You Cindy!

  9. A very powerful message Cindy. I have been close to death and serious injury; I nearly drowned in a pool once and narrowly being hit years later by a speeding car. I believe that without a doubt that God had His hand on me on both these occasions. Thank you sister for this precious reminder to be thankful everyday.
