What Is Following Jesus All About?

I felt peace, even though I was still scared to death. I thought that, whatever would happen to me – I could still be killed. I didn’t know – and in what I’d already been through, God was in control.”

Diet Eman

I am reading the book, Things We Couldn’t Say, by Diet Eman. I’m inspired by Diet’s writing because she lived out her faith. She was a doer of the Word. She was an obedient child of God.

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James 1:22 ESV

Diet shares her experiences in the Dutch Resistance during WW2. She and her fiance helped provide shelter to Jews, downed Allied pilots, and other targets of Nazi persecution. She spent months on the run, frequently changing locations and her name.

Because the Gestapo was after her, she was forced to live with strangers and stay away from her home. But that didn’t stop her from helping the Jewish people. She risked her own life every day to help others escape the Nazis. She did this because she loved and trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ.

That is quite a legacy. But this is only a small part of Diet’s story. There is much more. I hope you will take the time to read her book. It has made me think hard about my own life.

“Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13 NASB

I like books that make me think about what it really means to trust in God. In my opinion, Diet’s life describes the true Christian life. Jesus said,

“…the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant … But I am among you as the one who serves.” Luke 22: 26-27

It can be hard to wrap my head around that sometimes, but Jesus clearly teaches us to serve and love others. This is how we show our love to Him.

Loving Jesus is not merely a feeling; it is an active, abiding, ongoing relationship of following and obeying our loving Master: “We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands” (1 John 2:3).

I love to read some of the old books written by Christians who truly walked in love, who put others before themselves, books that teach us to live for the Lord and always trust in His goodness and love.

Trust and Obey: That is what following Jesus is really all about.

Quote of the Week, 3/9/22

We must mirror God’s love in the midst of a world full of hatred. We are the mirrrors of God’s love, so we may show Jesus by our lives.”

Corrie ten Boom, Holocaust Survivor

NOTE: Corrie ten Boom and her family helped Jews escape the Nazi Holocaust during World War II and, by all accounts, saved nearly 800 lives. Corrie was caught and remanded to the notorious Ravensbrück concentration camp, near Berlin. On December 16, 1944, Corrie was released for reasons unknown. She began a worldwide ministry that took her to more than 60 countries where she preached forgiveness and God’s love.
