Quote of the Week for 9/3/25

“Because He lives forever, there will never be a time when this great high priest can not show forth His blood that was shed for you, when His prayers will not pour forth effectual blessing upon your life. When you die and are presented before God’s throne, He will be there, pointing to the wounds he earned upon the cross, charging your debt to the account He has already paid. His priesthood is eternal, never-ending, securing eternal life to give you.” Richard D. Phillips, Pastor

” … but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Hebrews 7:24-25 Read full chapter

The Power of Patience in Prayer

1-minute devotion for Tuesday, 9/2/25

“Since ancient times no one has heard,
    no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,
who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.” Isaiah 64:4

I have found that sometimes it seems like God is not answering my prayers when, in reality, He is asking me to wait and be patient.

This happened recently. I have been praying for over two years for guidance in an important decision. Guidance finally came when circumstances changed and the answer to my prayers became obvious. I had done the right thing by waiting. Sometimes, we just don’t have all the facts!

“… the fruit of the Spirit is … patience…” Galatians 5:22

Jesus said we should “pray and not give up.” Luke 18:1

5 Ways to Safeguard Your Child’s Faith

1-minute devotion for Monday, 9/1/25

Jesus said, “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” (Matthew 18:6)

My Thoughts: Worldly influences prey upon our children every day. They may come through TV, social media, schools, music, or books. How can we protect these little ones? Here’s a start:

  1. Pray for them.
  2. Teach them God’s Word.
  3. Take them to church.
  4. Protect them from propaganda as much as you are able.
  5. Have conversations with your child when controversial subjects come up, letting them know they can talk to you, unafraid. Listen to them carefully. Respond with love and gentleness.

The True Path of Discipleship

Sunday’s Memory Verse for 8/31/25

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Jesus (Mark 8:34 )

Following Jesus is not always easy. It requires faith and courage.

Understanding Biblical Faith: Trusting God to Be God

Many of you know the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel chapter 3. Taken captive and carried to Babylon, these three young Jewish men refused to bow down and worship King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden statue, even though the penalty for not obeying it was to be burned alive.

Some Chaldeans reported them to the king, naming each man, and even reminding the king of the stated punishment.

The king was furious with rage and ordered that the men be brought before him! He gave them one last chance to obey his command to worship the image of gold. But they still refused. They said,

” … our God whom we serve is able to rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire, and He will rescue us from your hand, O king.  But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods nor worship the golden statue that you have set up.Daniel 3:17-18 NASB (emphasis mine)

Note that this event is mentioned in Hebrews 11, often referred to as “The Faith Chapter.” It teaches us what faith truly is. (See v. 34 specifically)

The men were willing to risk their lives, not just because they believed God would rescue them, but because they trusted God, no matter what happened. Their faith was not in a certain outcome because trusting God for a certain outcome is not faith at all. It is an attempt to take control.

We may convince ourselves that the outcome we want must be God’s will. But that does not make it so. Biblical faith is the ability to let God be God and trust His goodness and love. It doesn’t rest on our efforts to conjure up enough faith to cause the thing we want to actually happen.

The king was so angry that he ordered that the furnace be heated seven times hotter than usual! He had soldiers tie them up and throw them into the furnace. It was so hot that the flames killed the soldiers! But then,

“Nebuchadnezzar the king was astounded and stood up quickly; he said to his counselors, “Was it not three men that we threw bound into the middle of the fire?” They replied to the king, “Absolutely, O king.” 25 He responded, “Look! I see four men untied and walking about in the middle of the fire unharmed, and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods!” 26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the furnace of blazing fire; he said, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, come out, you servants of the Most High God, and come here!” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego came out of the middle of the fire. 27 The satraps, the prefects, the governors, and the king’s counselors gathered together and saw that the fire had no effect on the bodies of these men, nor was the hair of their heads singed, nor were their trousers damaged, nor had even the smell of fire touched them.

28 Nebuchadnezzar responded and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who has sent His angel and rescued His servants who put their trust in Him, violating the king’s command, and surrendered their bodies rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. 29 Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation, or population of any language that speaks anything offensive against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego shall be torn limb from limb and their houses made a rubbish heap, because there is no other god who is able to save in this way.” 30 Then the king made Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego prosperous in the province of Babylon.” Daniel 3:24-30 NASB (emphasis mine)

They Perish Because They Refused to Love the Truth

1-minute devotion for Friday, 8/29/25

“The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 2 Thessalonians 2:10 Read full chapter

My thoughts: I want to encourage you to read and study the book of 2 Thessalonians (only 3 short chapters.) Just like new believers today, the Thessalonians were vulnerable to false teachers. Verse 10 clearly reveals what will happen to those who refuse to love the truth. God has given us the truth through His Word, the Holy Bible!

Trusting God in Discouraging Times

Meditation for Thursday, 8/28/25

“Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he appealed to God against Israel: “Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me”?  And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal. So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.  And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.” Romans 11:2b-6

My thoughts: These verses remind me that, like Elijah, sometimes we don’t see the whole picture. Elijah was so discouraged that he was about to give up. He thought he was the only one left, but there were 7,000 other faithfuls he didn’t know about. So when you’re discouraged and think all is lost, remember Elijah’s prayer and God’s response!

Satan’s Blocks: Recognizing Spiritual Challenges

1-minute devotion for Tuesday, 8/26/25

“For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan blocked our way. For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? Indeed, you are our glory and joy.” 1 Thessalonians 2:18-20 (emphasis mine) Read full chapter

My thoughts: As I read Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians, these words stood out to me: “Satan blocked our way.” Don’t be surprised if Satan tries to block your way! Press on!

Jeremiah Study Bible Notes: “Satan blocked Paul from coming to visit the Thessalonians. The Greek word for blocked is a military term used when armies put barriers in the roadway to impede enemy forces. Satan takes extreme measures in his attempts to prevent God’s people from doing his will. As believers labor for Christ, they may encounter challenges … but nothing brings joy like seeing the fruit of one’s labor … “

A Teachable Heart

1-minute devotion for Monday, 8/25/25

“Then He said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear. By your own standard of measurement [that is, to the extent that you study spiritual truth and apply godly wisdom] it will be measured to you [and you will be given even greater ability to respond]—and more will be given to you besides. For whoever has [a teachable heart], to him more [understanding] will be given; and whoever does not have [a yearning for truth], even what he has will be taken away from him.” Jesus, Mark 4:24-25 AMP

Commentary: “People reap what they sow, even in their reception to the Word. Those who apply Jesus’ words to their lives are given even more spiritual truth, making their lives richer. Those who do nothing with His words lose what little spiritual understanding they already possess.” Jeremiah Study Bible Notes
