Hope in Times of Despair

1-minute devotion for Monday, 12/8/25

"Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness." Lamentations 3:22-23

This is a familiar verse to many of us. To understand the depth of meaning in this verse, we must understand what happened before Jeremiah said these words.

Jeremiah prophesied to the people of Israel, but the people didn’t like what God had to say, so they listened to the false prophets instead. They hated Jeremiah because he spoke the truth. They threw him in a pit and threw stones at him while he sat in the mud.

Because they refused to listen to God, Jerusalem was destroyed, and the people were exiled to Babylon. Jeremiah grieved deeply for Israel, the people and city he loved.

Look at verses 19-21 of Lamentations 3. Jeremiah said,

“I remember my affliction and my wandering,
    the bitterness and the gall.
I well remember them,
    and my soul is downcast within me.
Yet this I call to mind
    and therefore I have hope:

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.”

When the worst has happened, and we don’t understand why God has allowed it, if we remember God’s great love, compassion, and faithfulness, we will have hope.

This is a psalm of David when he had fled from Saul into the cave. Although David’s enemies are out to destroy him, he sings of God’s love and faithfulness. When we are in trouble, may we do the same.
