If Only I Had Henry’s Perseverance! (Encouragement With a Dose of Humor)

Perseverance: the quality of being someone who continues to make an effort to achieve their aims, even when this is difficult or takes a long time

To say that my pup, Henry, perseveres is the understatement of the year. If he wants something, he never gives up! Here’s an example:

Henry starts softly barking at me. I don’t know what he wants. I keep saying, “What? What?” He doesn’t give up. Finally, he starts doing twirls. That’s one of his tricks. Now I get it. He wants a treat!

Henry sleeps in my bed. For some reason, he wants me to get up every morning at 6:30. In fact, he insists on it! After he gets me up, he gets in his dog bed and goes back to sleep!

About 9pm he’s ready for bed. He gets his favorite toy and waits for me to put him up on my bed.

In the photo below, Henry is hiding from me because he thinks I’m going out and I’ll put him in the bathroom. Why? Because he saw me put on make-up! (I’m not kidding!)

Below Henry enjoys the electric blanket. (Do you think he’s spoiled?)

Every day at 4:00 pm he thinks he is supposed to get a special treat. Trust me, he won’t give up until he gets it. When my son was keeping Henry for a couple of days he forgot to give him his 4:00 treat. Henry literally went and got the bag of treats!

Henry knows what it means to persevere. He wants what he wants and he never tires until he gets it. Watching him reminds me that perseverance is effective. God reminds me that if Henry can persevere, so can I! So can you!

I hope that adding a little humor to this admonition will give you a laugh and help you to be as persevering as Henry!

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” James 1:2-3 NIV

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” James 1:12 NIV

“…make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;” 2 Peter 1:5-6 NIV

Friday’s Verse, 1/12/24

“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting comfort and encouragement and the good [well-founded] hope [of salvation] by His grace, comfort and encourage and strengthen your hearts [keeping them steadfast and on course] in every good work and word.” 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 AMP (emphasis mine)

Verse for Meditation, 1/11/24

“May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.” 2 Thessalonians 3:5 NIV (emphasis mine)

To direct means “to remove the obstacles that stand in the way” – in this case, any barriers to spiritual growth. (David Jeremiah Study Bible notes)

Quote of the Week, 1/10/24

Jesus came and the last days began. The church has been waiting in expectancy since then… Let’s make sure our words and actions put forth a clear message that Jesus is coming soon, and that all need to be ready to meet Him.”

Amir Tsarfati, from his book The Day Approaching

“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.” Hebrews 1:1-2 NIV (emphasis mine)

Tuesday’s Verse, 1/9/24

“The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie,  and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.  For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.” 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 NIV

My thoughts: Make sure you love the truth. God’s Word is Truth.

Why Should We Care About Israel?

I’ve often wondered what I would have done if I had lived in Germany during the Holocaust. Would I have just gone along, business as usual? Would I have buried my head in the sand? Or would I have faced the truth about what was going on and asked God what He would have me do? Would I have risked my life by hiding Jews?

The Holocaust was possible because of the lies and propaganda perpetuated by Hitler. Propaganda is a powerful weapon and today it is more easily wielded than ever because of social media.

Today, Jews are under a demonic attack that hasn’t been seen since the Holocaust. I don’t want to bury my head in the sand. And I certainly don’t want to be deceived by the proliferation of propaganda and lies that abound in the news and social media today.

Even though it breaks my heart, I want to know the truth. Unfortunately, news services are not reliable sources of information because they only report the stories that conform to their narrative. News that does not fit that narrative will not be reported. Consider the words of Matti Friedman, former AP correspondent.

“In early 2009, for example, two colleagues of mine obtained information that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had made a significant peace offer to the Palestinian Authority several months earlier, and that the Palestinians had deemed it insufficient. This had not been reported yet and it was—or should have been—one of the biggest stories of the year.”

Friedman goes on to say, “During the 2008-2009 Gaza fighting I personally erased a key detail—that Hamas fighters were dressed as civilians and being counted as civilians in the death toll—because of a threat to our reporter in Gaza. (The policy was then, and remains, not to inform readers that the story is censored unless the censorship is Israeli.)”

(You can read Friedman’s entire essay here: An Insiders Guide to the Most Important Story on Earth)

Amir Tsarfati is a believer in Jesus Christ, Bible teacher, and author who lives in Israel. Here is a post from Amir’s Telegram page on 1/1/24. You won’t see this on the news!

“For this is what the Lord Almighty says: “After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye—  I will surely raise my hand against them so that their slaves will plunder them. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me.” Zechariah 2:8-9 NIV (emphasis mine)

God said, “I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. Genesis 17:7 NIV (emphasis mine)

“The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.” Genesis 13:14-15 NIV (emphasis mine)

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels.” For the sake of my brothers and friends, I will say, “Peace be within you.” For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your prosperity.” Psalm 122:6-9 NIV (emphasis mine)

By the way, ostriches don’t really bury their heads in the sand. Only humans do that!

According to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the majority of children arriving at camps like Auschwitz were sent directly to the gas chambers upon arrival. Some, however, were chosen for dangerous science experiments or forced manual labor. Pictured here, child survivors of Auschwitz don adult-size prisoner jackets.
