Magic: the power of apparently influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces
Is magic real, or is magic just an illusion? Are there people who really call upon demonic forces to experience the supernatural?
God warns his people not to participate in such things, yet I fear that many Christians are unaware of the danger they put themselves in when they seek the supernatural.
Have you ever gone to a fortune-teller for fun? Have you read your horoscope and said, βThat is so true!β Have you ever participated in a sΓ©ance or played with a Ouija board?
You may be thinking, “There’s nothing wrong with a little fun. It’s no big deal.” But do you know what God’s word says about this?
Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.”
What does that mean? It means you can do something you think is innocent even though it is very dangerous.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 says: “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord;”
That is as clear as glass, but I wonder how many Christians know these verses. Fortunetelling is the art of forecasting the future, supposedly by supernatural means, and is an ancient practice, still popular today.
Fortunetelling is also known as divination. Fortune-tellers include anyone who claims to predict your future or advise your life through such means as Ouija boards, crystal balls, horoscopes, astrology, palm-reading, tarot cards, etc.
These practices take place today, just as they did long ago. Participating in these practices can bring you a lot of trouble. I know a person whose 16-year-old daughter was so filled with fear that she would not sleep in her own room. She said she saw ghosts. What did she do to open this door? I don’t know what she did, but I believe that someone did something that welcomed evil spirits into the home, probably an occult activity.
The Bible has plenty to say about witchcraft, sorcery, and divination. The Scripture I have shown you is just the tip of the iceberg. I urge you to study this for yourself. It is so important to be knowledgeable about God’s word in this day and time. We are living in a time when the world is fascinated with the supernatural. Therefore, these practices will become normalized in society. In fact, they already are.
“Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, βThese men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.β She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, βIn the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!β At that moment the spirit left her.” Acts 16:16-18 NIV
All believers must discern for themselves what is right and true. Discernment comes from knowing God’s word, loving the truth, and protecting your heart.
“Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:23 AMP
“Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors.” Psalm 119:24 NIV
“If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. Psalm 119:92 NIV
“All your words are true. All your righteous laws are eternal.” Psalm 119:160
“Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.” Psalm 119:165

The idea of magic sold to the world as harmless fun really is an illusion of the most evil kind. Satan laughs and rubs his hands together when we believe that magic or divination is harmless. Believing such leaves the door to our soul wide open to demons only too glad to enter.
May our Father God continue to guide and bless you today my friend and sister π

Thank you, Alan. My son and new DIL are off on their honeymoon, family has returned to their hometowns, and life is back to normal. I thank the Lord for safe travels he provided everyone.
Thank you for adding your insights to this post.
May God bless you richly as you serve Him, my friend and brother! π

Cindy, thank you for this. Iβm not sure what I believe about all of it, but I can tell you what happened in my family. My mother once let someone read her palm and was told someone close to her would die. Some time later, it was my two-year-old sister. I donβt know whether the two are connected, and Iβve stopped needing to know. But Iβve never been able to treat it as a small thing, and Iβd say to anyone considering it: be careful, and think hard before you go looking for answers about the future. Not everything we invite in is harmless, and not everything that hurts us is our fault.

Thank you for commenting, Mary. I’m so sorry to know your family lost a young child. Nothing could be more painful.
You’re absolutely right when you say, “Not everything we invite in is harmless.”
God reveals through His Word what is sinful, not to give us a rulebook, but to protect us against evil.
If someone engages in witchcraft of any kind, they should repent and ask God for forgiveness. He will forgive their sin.
If God says these occult activities are detestable to Him, that’s all we need to know.
God bless you today, Mary!

Yes and amen! As Christians, I agree that Godβs Word is true 100%. I also recognize that not everyone shares that belief … I’m sure what my own mother did was out of pure ignorance and curiosity. She wasn’t grounded in the Word.

I’m afraid that many Christians are ignorant about what God’s Word says about witchcraft. I’ve never heard it preached from church or taught in Sunday School. The churches are silent.

The thing about horoscopes is that even if you know they’re poppycock, they can be very entertaining. Back in the pre-internet era, when we got a daily newspaper, I used to read my horoscope just for chuckles. On my birthday in 1984, it predicted that my opportunities for creativity would increase in April of the coming year. I was pregnant with our son at that time, and sure enough, he was born the following April, demonstrating that even a blind squirrel sometimes finds an acorn. π By remarkable coincidence, I also found a bird’s nest in our Christmas tree that year — something that had never happened before and hasn’t happened since — which according to an old superstition means you’re going to have a baby within the next year. We had a good laugh over it!

Things like what you described can be used to draw you into the occult. It is seductive. Please take the Scripture seriously that warns us against it. Any kind of witchcraft can open doors you don’t want opened. That is why God warns us about it over and over. I pray that God will open your eyes to the truth. His Word is truth. βοΈπ

I understand and appreciate your concern, but I was never in any danger of being drawn into the occult. I read the horoscope only for laughs, and to marvel that anyone was gullible enough to believe that stuff. It can be seductive to people who are susceptible, but as a lifelong Christian, I was not. Anyway, I haven’t read one in decades, having discovered much better ways to get my laughs! π

I will leave you with the words of our Brother in Christ, Alan Kearns:
“The idea of magic sold to the world as harmless fun really is an illusion of the most evil kind. Satan laughs and rubs his hands together when we believe that magic or divination is harmless. Believing such leaves the door to our soul wide open to demons only too glad to enter.”
May we always reject any and every thing the Lord calls detestable.
God bless you today. π

It’s obviously not harmless to everyone, and I would never claim that it was. To anyone in danger of being sucked into the occult, it’s certainly very dangerous. Since there was zero chance of my being taken in by it, reading a horoscope for laughs was at worst a waste of time on my part. I liken it to having an occasional glass of wine. Since I know there is zero chance of my ever becoming an alcoholic (I’m 72 and have never been drunk once in my life), I can have a glass of wine every once in a while. But if I were an alcoholic or in danger of becoming one, I would have to pass it up, because it would be asking for serious trouble. I can read a murder mystery without ever being tempted to commit murder. I have my temptations the same as any other Christian, but divination, drunkenness, and murder are not among them. I’m not a total idiot; I know what things I have to avoid. But I also know that God loves me, his Son has saved me, and his Spirit protects me, so I don’t have to live my life in fear.
I’m sorry for having commented on this subject. I had intended for my comment to be humorous, and instead I caused you unnecessary consternation and worry. That was not my goal. My apologies.
