Why Do We Blog?

2-Minute Devotion for Tuesday, 9/22/26

“If God has called you, do not spend time looking over your shoulder to see who is following you.” Corrie ten Boom*

Why do we blog? Why do we write? As Christian writers, we say it’s to tell people about Jesus and His love. But we must be careful that our ultimate desire is to follow Him, not to be followed. He has promised to guide us by His Word.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.” Psalm 119:105

This is especially true for those of us who want people to follow our blog, Facebook, or Instagram. Although we are encouraged when readers decide to follow us, that cannot be our guiding force.

What good is it if millions of people follow your blog, but God isn’t in it? When we follow Him, God can use us to encourage and bring hope to others.

The Apostle Paul taught “from house to house”. (Acts 20:20)

Did you notice that he did not consider himself too important to reach out to a small number of people?

When we fix our eyes on Jesus and follow Him, He will accomplish His purpose in our lives and in our writing.

Should we develop our skills and study our craft to be the best writers we can be? Absolutely!  The Bible says,

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart…” Colossians 3:23

I am convinced that the closer we follow Him, the more He will use us for His purposes. We must not despise the day of small beginnings. (Zechariah 4:10) If only one person is encouraged by what you wrote, God has used you! God cares about individual people.

Nothing thrills me more than when a reader tells me, “I needed this!” or “This spoke to me.” Then I know that God has used me.

May we always follow Him with our whole heart and pray as Jesus taught us:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.”

Are you blogging to follow Him or to be followed?

In His Love, Cindy

  1. A clear, needed reminder — one that cuts through the noise of metrics, followers, and digital applause. The heart of this devotion is simple and sharp: if the goal of writing drifts from following Jesus to being followed, the work loses its power. What gives the piece its weight is the way it anchors everything in Scripture — the lamp for the feet, the call to wholehearted work, the warning not to despise small beginnings.

There’s a beautiful humility running through it. Paul teaching “from house to house” is the perfect counterpoint to modern platform anxiety. The devotion refuses the lie that impact is measured in numbers; it insists that faithfulness is measured in obedience. And the closing prayer pulls the whole thing back to the center — God’s kingdom, God’s will, God’s daily bread.

A good word for any Christian writer: let the audience be God first, and trust Him with whoever else He chooses to gather.

  2. Thank you, Cindy. This is so very true, and it’s something that’s been on my heart as well. Recently, someone commented that I didn’t have many likes or comments, and suggested ways to increase followers, or to consider “a new hobby”. I explained that my blogging was not a hobby, but a ministry God had placed in my heart, and called me to. It’s not about a number, but about allowing God to use me to share the good news of Christ, to share the gospel, to point others toward Him, to encourage, to uphold accountability, to help discern, to pray, etc. it’s all about Him. I needed this reminder today after that discouraging conversation. Thank you for sharing this because it is a confirmation that I am doing what God has called me to. Thank you, dear blogger friend. You’re a blessing.

    1. Kelli, Discouragement comes from the devil, so forget all that! I love your blog and I think it’s excellent! Sometimes I think a post I wrote was mainly for me! One of the biggest lies the devil tells me is that I shouldn’t be doing this (blogging) because blah, blah, blah… He is pretty good at his evil schemes, but he is a liar! God bless you, Kelli, as you serve our precious Savior! May God strengthen you with encouragement!
