Why Israel Remains God’s Chosen People

Devotion for Sunday, 8/2/26

The Jews are still God’s chosen people and always will be. This is clearly stated in both the Old Testament and the New Testament.

As I began studying the book of Luke this morning, I noticed that the first chapter stated this truth three times!

“But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.  You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,  and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” Luke 1:30-33 NIV

“He has helped his servant Israel,
    remembering to be merciful
to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.” Luke 1:54-55 NIV

“His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.
He has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David
(as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),
 salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us—
to show mercy to our ancestors
and to remember his holy covenant,
the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
and to enable us to serve him without fear
in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.” Luke 1:67-75 NIV

Some people falsely claim that the Church has replaced Israel. But God’s Word is clear. His Covenant and promises to Israel are everlasting. They are forever! Nothing anyone says can change this fact.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of this debate. God has clearly said,

“I will bless those who bless you,
    and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:3 NIV
