When We Don’t See God at Work

1-minute devotion for 12/7/25

Now Thomas ... was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:24-29

Trusting God means looking beyond what we can see to what He sees. This is the very essence of faith—we don’t see God at work, but we have confidence in Him anyway. We must actively obey Him and have confidence in His love for us before He will bless us.

    1. I am praying for you, my dear friend. God knows what you need. He knows how you feel. He loves you. He is with you every second of every day.
      “So do not fear, for I am with you;
      do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
      I will strengthen you and help you;
      I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

    1. Diane, I hate to hear this. I don’t want you to feel desperate (although I myself have felt this way a few times). I want you to feel hopeful and at peace. There was a time that I had to fight to put down fear and have peace. I am going to give you a link to a post I wrote about refusing to be fearful. I hope it might encourage you, my friend.

  1. So many of us have doubts or remain committed to a cynical type of “I’ll believe it when I see it” attitude. It is comforting to know that He has already spoken of the very essence of faith and gave us the example to follow. Thank you for this message, Cindy! Have a blessed Sunday!

    1. Mary, Yes! Sometimes we just have to refuse to give in to fear. We have to fight against fear because God’s Word says, “Do not fear for I am with you.” Isaiah 41:10
      God bless you this morning, my friend! 🙏
