The Mustard Seed: Understanding God’s Kingdom

1-minute devotion for Friday, 9/5/25

Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.” Luke 13:18-19

When I was a little girl about 6 or 7 years old, I was given a white Bible that zipped up. The zipper was connected to a little chain and on the end was a glass marble with a mustard seed inside. I didn’t understand the significance of the mustard seed then. But I do now.

My pastor described it like this: Looking at a mustard seed is like looking at one pixel of a photo. You have no idea what you’re looking at. Even if you double the number of pixels over and over and over, you still have no idea what you’re looking at! We can’t see what it is because we’re too close to it! WE CAN’T SEE THE BIG PICTURE! BUT GOD CAN!

Think about it!

  1. This is beautiful, Cindy! My tiny seed of faith has grown into a forest of trees! It started with the one little seed. Your example of the pixel as shared by your pastor was shocking! It’s so true! We don’t see the big picture—but these seeds grow and grow.
I’ve missed you, dear sister. This summer’s situations have caused my faith to grow EVEN BIGGER~ I trust God always and love him with every fiber in me! We serve a faithful and mighty Savior!
