Bible Illiteracy: A Call to Christians

1-minute read Tuesday, 4/8/25

“I delight in your decrees;
I will not neglect your word.” Psalm 119:16 NIV

“For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we, through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures, might have hope.”  Romans15:4 KJV

Many Christian leaders have said that Bible illiteracy is the plague of our times, and I agree.

“Of over 2 billion Christians in the world, less than 30% will ever read through the entire Bible. The fact is over 82% of Christian Americans only read their Bibles on Sundays while in church. One of the main reasons why American Christians don’t read their bibles is, only 22% of them believe the Bible is fully inspired by God Himself.” (Ponce Foundation)

My opinion: Ignorance is not bliss. We don’t have to live in the dark. God has given us a great treasure, His Word.

“The law from your mouth is more precious to me
than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.” Psalm 119:72 NIV

“If your law had not been my delight,
I would have perished in my affliction.” Psalm119:92 NIV

“Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.” Psalm 119:105

Read all of Psalm 119 HERE.

In His Love, Cindy

  1. These statistics are quite sad; a similar statistic is that only 9% of UK Christians (who make up only 6% of the UK population) read their Bible each day. Yet on the plus side, recent research shows an increase in young people attending church and/or reading the Bible, but not in the state Churches of England or Scotland.
May we cling to our Father God and His Word everyday!
God bless you today sister 🙏

    1. Some probably not, but some have been misled. I pray that everyone would come to understand that the Bible is not only God’s Word to us, but it is our great treasure. Blessings, Pastor Pete!

  2. Growing up in a denomination that teaches only those in leadership after long years of study are able to understand Scriptures, lock myself and many others out of a true relationship with God. What a delight to know that is not what God said, if we lack wisdom, ask Him for it and He will gladly give it to us, James 1:5. This scripture was a fountain for me, as someone with a learning disability, it did not matter to God, He opened up the Word to me and I am ever so grateful. It has been my prayers to always be prepared to give an answer for the hope within. Thank you Cindy for doing that so well.
