Quote of the Week, 3/12/25

“When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds and diamonds are made under pressure.”

Peter Marshall

A Little About Peter Marshall

Peter Marshall was born in Coatbridge, Scotland, a poverty-stricken coal-mining community, where he was reared by his mother and stepfather. From an early age, he decided he would be a missionary to China. To meet the educational requirements, he enrolled in evening classes while working in the mines by day, but his progress was slow. In 1927, a cousin offered to pay Peter’s way to the U.S., where he could receive proper ministerial training. He graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1931. He went on to become pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC, and was appointed as Chaplain of the United States Senate in 1946.

Catherine Marshall wrote a biography of her husband, A Man Called Peter (1951), which was a popular success. It was adapted as a movie and released in 1955 and was nominated for an Oscar. You can watch the movie here.

    1. Karla, We have missed you, too! My son had back surgery Monday and I have been staying with him. Thank the Lord he is doing really well. It was really hard for me to fight fear on this. But the Lord gave me the grace to do it. He is so faithful! I pray that you are doing well. Blessings, my friend! 🙏💕🐾

      1. Oh, Cindy. I’m sorry your son is going through this. Praise God that you’re with him. I’m praying for healing and peace. I’m so happy to hear the Lord gave you the grace in his faithfulness! I’m doing ok, sweet friend. There are so many layers and you understand. I’m headed back to the cancer center today to go over yesterday’s MRI (that’s 4 scans since D.C.) and I’ll have a treatment. Hopefully, I’ll be moving forward at a different pace soon. I’ve had progression in the bones and lymph nodes. Due to the fast appearance on some, my drs at the NCI want to rescan in 6 months. I’m taking one hour at a time. Reflecting on my daily schedule, and with kids, on the best way to move forward. God has it all. HE is our refuge isn’t he, precious friend?
May God be with you, your son (give him my prayers, please). And sweet Henry too. Love you, dear Cindy. 💗🤗💛🙏🏼🙏🏼🐾
