Witchcraft Is Not Innocent Fun

The occult has become part of American culture. Every Christian should know that divination is an abomination to God. But do they?

1 Chronicles 10 is the story of King Saul’s last day on Earth. He is wounded by the enemy and then kills himself to keep from being captured. The next day, the Philistines stripped him and cut off his head. Verses 13 and 14 (NIV) say,

“Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance,  and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.” (emphasis mine)

Many Scriptures make it clear that all types of divination are a sin and an abomination to God. Here are a few.

“When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.  Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft,  or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.” Deuteronomy 18:9-11 NIV (emphasis mine)

β€œI will set my face against anyone who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute themselves by following them, and I will cut them off from their people.” Leviticus 20:6 NIV

“Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.” Leviticus 19:31 NIV

God calls these things detestable. Yet many people think the occult is just innocent fun. Nothing could be farther from the truth! The devil will entice God’s people to sin in any way he can. One of his favorite ways is to make the sin seem innocent. (It’s just for fun!) But it’s not innocent fun, and sin has consequences. Remember Eve and the crafty serpent?

“Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, β€œDid God really say, β€˜You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” Genesis 3:1 NIV (emphasis mine)

The serpent deceived her into thinking it wasn’t really a sin.

Christians should look to God for guidance, not demons. In this passage, the Apostle Paul commands an evil spirit (demon) to come out of the girl who was a fortune teller.

“Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, β€œThese men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, β€œIn the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.
Acts 16:16-18 NIV

Some methods of divination include psychics, tarot cards, ouija boards, reading tea leaves, astrology, horoscopes, zodiac signs, fortune tellers, witchcraft, drug use, the Enneagram, and all occult activities.

Ouija Board
Tarot Cards

We open a door to evil spirits by participating in these things. Remember, sorcery of any kind is not innocent fun. The power of the occult is demonic. God’s Word is our only guide.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” James 1:5-6 NIV

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV

“Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.” Psalm 119:105 NIV

Necromancy is the supposed practice of communicating with the dead. In reality, it involves demons and opens the one who practices it to demonic influence. Satan and his demons seek to destroy us, not to impart truth or wisdom.

MY EXPERIENCE

When I was a teenager, I participated in a seance with friends. They said there would be someone there who really knew how to do it. That night, I was overcome by intense fear I had never experienced before or since. I knew I was doing something I shouldn’t be doing.

I repented of this sin and would never, never do it again. I learned my lesson well.

If you know someone who is troubled by unusual fear, make sure they are not opening the door to demons in some way. If they are involved in the occult, they need to study the Scripture, pray, and repent.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 NIV

  1. Two years ago I met a friend at Bible Study and we started hanging out, having play dates and became good friends. I found out she believed herself to be a β€œChristian witch” and did tarot. She also believe she had faeries in her house (invisible visitors that would interact with her and her youngest baby) and she used crystals. I tried to overlook it because I really needed friendship at that time and ended up bringing heavy spiritual warfare into my home. I ended up cutting her off and blocking her number when she decided to join a manifesting class for New Years. It took me months of repenting before I felt like my home was clear of the spiritual warfare we faced in the forms of sickness, nightmares and night terrors from my kids, sounds I could not explain… it was a lesson for sure not to overlook that kind of sin.

    1. Thank you for sharing your experience. I pray that others will read your comments. It’s interesting that you met her at a Bible study! I know that there are many naive Christians who think these things are innocent. They are not innocent. They are dangerous! God bless you, Katherine!

      1. That is why I initially was more trusting of her because I assumed she was a Bible believing Christian. She was very set in her ways and would not take correction. She had an answer for everything when I tried to question her justification. I still pray for her and her kids every day.

        1. I have met people like this who won’t even consider what you show them in the Word, even when it’s as clear as glass. It is good for you to pray for her, that her eyes will be opened to the truth of God’s Word. Blessings, Katherine!

    2. Scary, and that too from someone who was at Bible study. A good reminder for all to not blindly believe someone just because they are in church or at Bible study. Glad you shut that door.

  2. It is so important to highlight this as many like you mentioned think it is just fun and no harm in doing it. But I truly believe that it opens doors for demons.
Katherine’s message above is just a testament to that sort of thing.

  3. Thank you for this important message, Cindy. Too many people lack discernment and fall prey to these kinds of things, especially at Halloween time. It is NOT innocent fun. I experienced the fear like you described. I was very young, but I will NEVER forget what it felt like. I have never seen the enneagram in a list of occult practices and I don’t know much about it. It must not be what I thought it was… now I’m curious as to why it is included. Can you tell me? I know several people- church people (not my church) who are very into it!

    1. “The earliest mentions of the enneagram come from the early 20th century. Russian occultist P.D. Ouspensky and his teacher Georges I. Gurdjief claimed that the enneagram was a symbol of the stars. Later, occultist Γ“scar Ichazo was the first person to associate the enneagram with personality. Ichazo claimed that the archangel Metratron taught it to him while he was high on mescaline.”
The quote above is taken from the article “The Problem with the Enneagram”, in Biblical Christian Worldview.

      1. Catholic mysticism loves the enneagram. When I confronted a really good friend over that, she was really upset with me. Why anyone would want to label themselves a number is beyond me. What irritates me even more is that people have more confidence in that number than they do what God says about them. Experimentalism runs totally counter to walking by faith and not by sight. Thanks in advance for letting me share!

    2. Doreen Virtue has a wonderful podcast with Jac Marino Chen and Jenn Nizza called New Age to New Heart that explains the enneagram well as well as several other podcasters like Alisa Childers. It really is very new age & was created through automatic writing.

  4. Thanks you ever so much for doing this post. I pray a lot will read it. I have never gotten into Yoga but was told by a person who use to do it that whey they found out the origin of it they quit. My doctor told me that some of the positions required for Yoga are called death possess and warned me never to do them. Yet so many of the local churches here have Yoga classes.

    1. Interesting you should say this. I plan to write a post on Yoga for next Saturday! I have never heard of death poses, but I will definitely do some research on it. Thanks for commenting. Blessings!

  5. Cindy, I thank God you repented and came back to Him. Someone I love is into that stuff now, and she doesn’t seem the least bit afraid, in fact, she’s offering her services to others. πŸ’” My prayer is that her eyes will be opened to exactly what she’s dealing with, and that she WILL be afraid – terrified – and come running back to her heavenly Daddy.

  6. When I was a teenager I had a wild, crazy friend with a Ouija board who convinced me to use it with her. We asked it girly questions like “Who am I going to marry?” Well, the planchette went crazy zipping all over the board spelling out profane messages before it flew off the table. Now, I won’t even go down a store aisle with a Ouija board.

  8. People are deceived as the Bible tells us by the β€˜god’ of this age. I have family members, all church raised who wandered into tarot, witchcraft, horoscopes, etc., and they think of it all as entertainmentβ€” I am not always popular for speaking up but I recently said to two family members that God calls it divination. I pray God opens their hearts and minds to know the truth that sets them free. πŸ™β€οΈβœοΈ

  9. I know someone who seemed to be a strong believer. She was in a very legalistic church. I don’t know what happened but I think something happened in that church along the line of them shunning and shaming her. She makes wonderful natural soaps, lotions, etc. But now she sells crystals, jewelry with various stones that she says bring peace, healing, etc., sage kits, and other items that are very suspicious to me. She also posts memes about nature that are promoting attitudes that seem like nature worship as well as quoting new age authors who talk a lot about loving yourself, doing things your own way, creating your own reality, and so forth. I grieve for her because I fear that she has opened her heart and soul to satan because of the hurt she experienced. She won’t talk to me about what happened or about the change in her heart. I fear that her disappointment has led to delusion. Thank you for shining a light on these issues, Cindy.

    1. You are right to be suspicious about the crystals, sage kits, etc. One cannot dabble in witchcraft! Just google it! Thanks for sharing your story. God bless you Patty. I pray she will have her eyes opened to truth. πŸ™

  10. My father’s family.practices witchcraft, they have a “god” built in a special room. This god is given gold dust and coins and sacrifice of animals for worship or w.e request they have in life…. My heritage is west African but I’m Canadian born….that side of the family had ZERO interest in Jesus even when my dad came to know Him….my grandma died a witch at a 100 plus years….only God knows what that woman did with her witchcraft…my dad’s side was so angry when my mom said they weren’t not allowed to plant some kind of tree for their god because my mom had had twins…there was a man my mom knew who would “travel” during the night and would see who would be doing witchcraft i rememberoverhearing him as a child when visiting Ghana the things he said he saw, he said he would take some plant chew it to travel..will nwver forgot the things he said….I have met so called “white witches” aka good witches they only do “good”, witchcraft and I really regret allowing that white witch to give us a reading when I and hubby were young newlyweds….all her readings pure trickery the stone turning colors and smoke starting up all illusion and tricks to make them seem credible, she really believed her craft and HATED the Bible…
Oh man she was so die hard in defending Isalm as a witch but bring up the Bible? She is ready to slice throats…..witch craft is everywhere and popular some think it’s fun or a just a other religion leading us to God but nope ! Yall worshipping a false god not the one of the Bible.
