Preoccupied with mystical encounters and emotional ecstasies, [many] seek ongoing revelation from heaven – meaning that, for them, the Bible alone is simply not enough. [With them], biblical revelation must be supplemented with personal “words from God,” supposed impressions from the Holy Spirit, and other subjective religious experiences. That kind of thinking is an outright rejection of the authority and sufficiency of Scripture (2 Tim. 3:16–17). It is a recipe for far-reaching theological disaster.

  3. Hi Cindy, I’m not sure if I’m understanding this correctly. When you say those who seek ongoing revelation. Do you not believe Jesus gives warnings to His people? Because the bible speaks of this very thing from the Old Testament to the New. The Apostle Paul tells us we’re all given spiritual gifts and in fact, we should pray for them according to the Bible. I agree, there are people who may distort this, but, I assure you, God speaks through His people as a way of warning them.

      1. I do believe Spiritual gifts are a part of the Church’s teachings. But, I also believe they can be misused. During Paul’s time different ones would speak a word, one instance specifically I recall, is when one of the members spoke there would be a famine in the land in an area where there were other Apostles. So they gathered food and would take it to that Church to help those going through the famine. This is the gifts which I’m speaking of.

        1. I think MacAuthur is warning Christians about movements we see today like the New Apostolic Reformation, also known as NAR and the Word of Faith movement. Both of these are dangerous and false. God’s Word, the Bible, provides everything we need to be “thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) One thing I know is that we must hold fast to the teaching of God’s Word.
