“THE CHOSEN” – Do I Dare Rock the Boat?

Some say, let’s all just get along. We all worship the same Jesus.

That’s certainly the easy road. But is it the right road? If you say, I don’t want to rock the boat, then ask yourself this: “Who will?”

The Apostle Paul wasn’t afraid to rock the boat. He spoke out boldly for the truth.

“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!  As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!” Galatians 1:8-9 NIV

Wow! Isn’t that a little harsh, Paul? No. It is not. It is our example. Consider this Scripture verse:

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.  They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” 2 Timothy 4:3-4 NIV

You may be wondering, What is she going on about? OK. Fair enough. I am going to share some information with you about “The Chosen” that you may be unaware of.

Get Ready. I’m going to “ROCK THE BOAT”!

The link below provides the most thorough, thought-provoking coverage of The Chosen that I have seen. I hope you will read it.

My question to you is this: Would we rather live in ignorant bliss, or are we willing to examine the facts?

In His Love, Cindy

  1. Thank you for linking my post, Cindy. “Rocking the Boat” isn’t a popular pastime these days, but asking others to consider information that they may not have been aware of, or taken into consideration, especially in light of God’s Holy Word that tells us to test everything (1 Thessalonians 5:21), is in itself, a biblical admonition. Blessings!

    1. “Rocking the Boat” isn’t a popular pastime these days” – You can say that again! It isn’t easy to swim upstream. It isn’t easy to go against the flow. All these saying have become very real to me. I appreciate your encouragement and support more than you know because I respect you. Blessings, my friend!

  2. There is too much detailed and thoughtful discussion in this article for me to digest and respond to yet. I have watched every episode and have a few straight up biblical issues with a few of them. On one hand I will certainly continue being alert for antibiblical content, I am not on board with tossing the entire series. I need more time to process and look into the long list of claims.

    1. Thank you for commenting, Pastor Pete. There is definitely a lot to learn about the creators of this show. Frankly, most Christians who watch the show are not aware of the intentions of the producers. I just know that I want my understanding of Jesus to come straight from the Bible and only the Bible. God bless you and your work in your ministry.

  3. Thank you for this thoughtful, if not provocative, post. I skimmed over the embedded articles but was ready to agree with your position beforehand.
It’s true that this popular series combines the Biblical perspectives of different beliefs such as LDS. But my angst goes farther.
Years ago when the popular ‘Jesus of Nazareth’ came out I began to see Christians referring to Biblical truths as though it was scripture but it really came from the movie. Truth gets blurred.
Now, more recently, I am aghast when I attend Bible studies and, invariably, someone will quote a scene or line from The Chosen as though it’s scripture.
Cindy, we have become casual and lazy toward the precious word of God. We can quote movies but not the powerful living word of God.
I shun all of it, I don’t want Hollywood or anyone planting scenes, faces, contrived encounters – I want the Holy Spirit to speak through the pages and plant our Lord’s word in my heart.
Enough Biblical entertainment! It is a facsimile that will rob us of the authentic living word which alone can renew our mind and heart.
Sorry for such a long comment!! Press on sister. ❤

    1. Lisa, Thank you for your comments. I completely agree with you. I had not heard of people quoting words from the series as if it were the Bible. That breaks my heart. Thank you for sharing that piece of information. That is exactly what I feared would happen! And it is very troubling. God bless you, my friend!

  4. I visited Salt Lake City a few years ago and went to view the temple. First thing I noticed was that the doors were locked, entry forbidden. Second, atop the temple was a statue of the “Angel Moroni”. While I greatly admire the family centered, hardworking, and generally moral lifestyle of the LDS members, theirs is in no way a Christian faith.

  5. Cindy, thank you for passing along Bruce’s article. I wonder how many evangelical pastors warned their flocks about the very popular “The Chosen”? I’m sure many didn’t want to “rock the boat.” The level of discernment (and fortitude) is dropping in evangelicalism and it starts in the pulpits.

    1. I agree with you, Tom. I know of a Baptist church that is showing The Chosen during the Sunday School hour. Maybe the pastor doesn’t have the power to stop it. I don’t know. I don’t understand the tolerance we see in the Church today. There is a spirit of ecumenicalism at work. And we know where that is leading. Thank you for your encouragement and support. Blessings, Tom.

  6. Although some of my “hard core” Christian friends rave about this series, I have been reluctant to view it. (I’ve never seen a movie that ‘portrays’ the Bible, even though they say it does. Would it be so hard to create a movie that takes dialog straight from Scripture? Really, do we think God’s Word needs our ‘improvement???) I had read a few reviews of it, and had cautions. Now I have more cautions, and I’m not interested. Like Lisa Beth said previously, living by the Bible in real life is hard enough without getting it mixed up with fiction. How awful to be quoting movie dialog and thinking it’s really God’s Word!

    1. Kathy, Thank you for your thoughtful comments. I agree with you. I don’t want to get the Jesus I know (from studying God’s Word) confused with “a different Jesus” portrayed in The Chosen. The Chosen even says, “Get used to different.” But the Apostle Paul said, “I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.”

  7. I have never watched the chosen. Lot of people saw it and recommended but for some reason I always felt a hesitation. Reading your post, I don’t regret not watching it. May we always turn to scripture to know about our Lord.

    1. “May we always turn to scripture to know about our Lord.” Amen to that!
Dallas Jenkins says, “Get used to different!”
My response: No, thanks. I’ll stick with the Jesus of the Bible.
      Blessings, Manu!

  8. Thanks for sharing! People at my Bible study group quote The Chosen or explain Bible verses via The Chosen, so… it’s a bit of a concern. I’ve not said anything because I’m literally brand new to the group, and I’m also not sure how to approach it.

    1. Yes, I think that is concerning, but I doubt there is much you can do. If people want to know more about what’s behind the show, you can provide links to good information. Blessings, Panda Mom!

  9. Cindy, I just want to add that we have discernment of The Spirit as well if walk in Him. I had many friends talking about and loving the show. Some were using it for a Bible Study.
When I started the first episode, something in my Spirit was unsettled with something in it. I turned it off and have never watched it. When God in you is speaking volumes against something, we should listen to that Still Small Voice. He leads us if we will follow.
Thank you for sharing this. Rock the boat every time your eyes are open to something with the presumption of a godly nature. The Word of God is clear & cannot be replaced by any other doctrine.

    1. Thank you, Chele, for your encouraging comments. I had the same reaction you did the first time I saw the show. I can’t figure out why so many Christians embrace it, and even study it! And apparently many pastors promote it. Any ideas on that?

      1. You’re welcome, Cindy. It’s sad this is happening. I think they are falling into the trap of believing that some feel they must comply with the wants of their flock instead of standing on The Word of God. We know this will inevitably place blood on their hands, because they must answer for leading people astray. These are perilous times for certain, and people are loving being taught to be a Christian all you must do is whatever feels good to you, regardless of sin. How very unfortunate this is. If they use this show as a guide, it’s sad indeed.
Since I haven’t watched the show, I am certainly not very knowledgeable about it, other than what I feel Spiritually as I said, and what others who have watched it have told me or had to say about it. I have been quite shocked as well at how many Christians I know who have embraced it as Biblical Truth.
Thankfully, with God’s lead, I know when something is off as you do also. Standing against and/or questioning something like this is not popular, but is needed for truth in God’s Word to reach the lost.
I was so glad to see your post and how many people feel the same way. It is encouraging to see so many of God’s people agreeing.
        God bless! With God’s Grace,
        Chele

        1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I agree that leaders may be giving in to the wants of their flock. This tells me that we must pray for our pastors. We don’t always know all the reasons they give in to pressure. I think the evil agenda behind this show will become more apparent as time goes on. Blessings, Chele!

  10. You’re rocking a pretty big boat, and I applaud you for it. After a bit of rocking myself and a lot of discussions about The Chosen with various folks I began to notice something. It seems that one of the reasons we are told to stop rocking is that maybe The Chosen WILL encourage people to actually read their Bibles and investigate Jesus for themselves. That thought isn’t just about The Chosen. It’s used all the time when you aske the question “Where’s the gospel?” when you watch a faith-based film or movie that never presents a 1 Cor 15:1-4 clear gospel message. It’s used when you listen to contemporary Christian music in which the ONLY attribute of God is love. And those two aren’t the only “adventures in missing the gospel” we are surrounded by. While I realize that they can definitely be positive ways to encourage people to further investigate Jesus and read their Bibles for themselves, I also sometimes wonder if they aren’t just excuses for not personally sharing the gospel or if including a clear gospel would hurt the bottom line ($). I don’t want to sound cynical. I often ask myself, “What if every believer was actively and personally sharing the gospel with one other person? “What if every believer was actively mentoring and discipling one young Christian?” Thanks for your post.

    1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Dan. Yes, some people say The Chosen will encourage people to read the Bible. I’d like to see some data on that because I doubt that is true. It’s more likely that people will accept the entertaining movie version of Jesus rather than seek to know Him from the Bible, which is how we SHOULD learn about Jesus. What worries me the most is Dallas Jenkins claim that he is revealing the “authentic Jesus”. That is really scary and a big red flag! Personally, I DO want to know the authentic Jesus, but The Chosen Jesus is not Him.
