Put Faith in Action During a Crisis

This morning I happened to come across the prayer journal I was keeping during a very difficult time about five years ago when I lost my job. That’s what I want to share with you today.

If you’re in a crisis situation, if you’re worried or anxious, there is something you can do. Put your faith in action! That means actually doing something. It means exerting energy! It’s not just hoping things will work out as you go about your days all worried and upset. Put your faith in action by taking these steps:

  1. Take notes as you study your Bible. In a journal, write down every Scripture that speaks to you and your situation.
  2. Write out your prayers.
  3. Incorporate the Scriptures into your prayers.
  4. Date your entries.

Faith starts with Truth entering your mind. You read a Scripture, you think about it, and you respond. For example, let’s say you are reading your Bible and you come to this passage:

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…” Ephesians 3:20

Write it down in your journal. Meditate on it. Write it into your prayer like this:

Dear Lord, I believe you are able to do immeasurably more than all I ask or imagine.

Following are some more prayer segments that I copied from my journal along with the Scripture references they came from.

“I will not be anxious about anything. Instead I will pray and petition you, Lord, making my requests to you with thanksgiving. The peace of God that transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. I am thankful for ……” from Philippians 4: 6

Lord, you are close to the broken-hearted and save those who are crushed in spirit. A righteous man may have many troubles, but you deliver him from them all.” (Psalm 34:18-19)

When I am afraid, I will trust in you.” (Psalm 56:3)

“I cast my care on you, for you sustain me.” (Psalm 55:22

You make all things work together for good for those who love you. I love you. I thank you for all the times you have already kept this promise to me.” (Romans 8:28)

You are my rock and my fortress, my God in whom I trust. Your faithfulness will be my shield and rampart.” I will not fear the unknown. (from Psalm 91)

“Because I love you, you will rescue me. You will protect me for I acknowledge your name. When I call upon you, you answer me. You are with me when I am in trouble.” (from Psalm 91)

I made a decision to trust God by writing down all the Scriptures that applied to my situation. I read them daily and put my trust in God. The Lord took that which was bad (or it seemed bad to me) and he worked it together for good!
