I long to put the experience of fifty years at once into your young lives, to give you at once the key to that treasure chamber every gem of which has cost me tears and struggles and prayers, but you must work for these inward treasures yourselves.”
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Born in 1811, she was the author of the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which described the harsh conditions of American slaves. With sales of 300,000 in the first year, the book exerted an influence equaled by few other novels in history. She was a staunch abolitionist and one of the most influential women of the 19th century.
