What Land Did God Give to Abraham?

Bible Study for Tuesday, October 7, 2025

On October 7, 2023, the world witnessed the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. Israel’s enemies want to take their land. But not only that, they want to wipe the Jewish people off the face of the earth!

Some people question Israel’s right to their land. They cry “Free Palestine!” They call Israel “occupiers”. But did you know that the territory God gave to Abram’s descendants includes all of present day Israel plus much more?

“On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates— the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.” Genesis 15:18-21 Read full chapter

Interesting Facts:

The wadi of Egypt refers to the Euphrates River which originates in the Armenian Highlands of southeastern Turkey and then flows through the countries of Syria and Iraq, and finally drains into the Persian Gulf.

Later, God appeared to Abram again…

 “I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.  The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.” Genesis 17:6-8 (emphasis mine) Read full chapter

Does God’s covenant include the descendants of Abram’s son Ishmael?

Then God said, “… your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.” When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.”

The best evidence indicates that Moses wrote Genesis between 1440 and 1400 BC. By my calculation, that’s about 3,465 years ago! AND YET this book is still relevant today! I am thankful that God has recorded in His Holy Word the precise boundaries of Israel!

On today’s map, the land God gave to Israel includes everything modern-day Israel possesses, plus all of the territory occupied by the Palestinians (the West Bank and Gaza), plus some of Egypt and Syria, plus all of Jordan, plus some of Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

And yet, many people claim that Israel is stealing a land not their own. How absurd!

Israel has many enemies. The biggest is Satan himself. He lies and deceives the nations. But the enemies of Israel will not succeed in their quest to annihilate God’s people, Israel.

God also said to Abram:

“I will bless those who bless you,
    and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
    will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:3

Israel has had to fight for their very existence for thousands of years, and they fight for it still today. Stand with Israel and be blessed.

Blessing or Curse?

1-minute devotion for Thursday, 10/2/25

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.”

 “I will make you into a great nation,
    and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
    and you will be a blessing.
 I will bless those who bless you,
    and whoever curses you I will curse;

NOW CONSIDER THIS:

When the Greeks overran Palestine and desecrated the altar in the Jewish temple, they were soon conquered by Rome.

When Rome killed Paul and many others, and destroyed Jerusalem under Titus, Rome soon fell.

Spain was reduced to a fifth-rate nation after the Inquisition against the Jews.

Poland fell after the pogroms.

Hitler’s Germany went down after its orgies of anti-Semitism.

Britain lost her empire when she broke her faith with Israel.

Verses for Meditation, 7/11/24

“The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. Genesis 13:14-15 NIV (emphasis mine)

God blessed Abram with all of Canaan! I’m constantly amazed at how the Word of God speaks to us and informs us today.

Offer Gratitude, Not Hatred

For believers in Jesus, Hanukkah is a sobering reminder of the evil force of antisemitism in the world. As believers, we should emulate God’s love for His chosen people by standing against antisemitism. (For an explanation of Hanukkah read this.)

I am shocked at the degree to which hatred has spread throughout our world today toward the Jewish people and the nation of Israel. Demonstrators chant “Free Palestine” and “From the river to the sea”. But when interviewed, less than half even knew what their chant meant. (Wall Street Journal)

“This terrifying pattern of antisemitic attacks has been relentless since the Israel-Hamas war began on Oct. 7, with no signs of diminishing,” Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the ADL, said in a statement. “The lid to the sewers is off, and Jewish communities all across the country are being inundated with hate.

CBS News

God had a plan to bless the world through the Jews.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NIV

He sent His son, Jesus, to save the world. No wonder Satan hates and wants to destroy the Jewish people.

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.

“I will make you into a great nation,
    and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
    and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
    and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
    will be blessed through you.”
Genesis 12:1-3 NIV (emphasis mine)

These words popped out to me today:

“and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

The Jewish people continue to bless the world even today. Although Jews are a small percentage of the population (0.2%), they have made an astounding number of contributions in the fields of medicine, science, art, and music for which everyone should be grateful.

Here are just a few:

  • Jonas Salk (creator of the first polio vaccine)
  • Albert Sabin (oral polio vaccine)
  • Galileo (pioneered the use of the telescope for observing the night sky. His discoveries undermined traditional ideas about a perfect and unchanging cosmos with the Earth at its center.)
  • Elie Wiesel (political activist, Nobel laureate, and Holocaust survivor. He authored 57 books)
  • Albert Einstein
  • Jerry Lewis (who raised more than $2 billion dollars for his Muscular Dystrophy Association Charity, Jerry’s Kids)
  •  Isaac Singer (inventor of the sewing machine)

(This list could go on and on, but I’ll stop here for the sake of brevity.)

The pro-Hamas demonstrators, when interviewed, showed little to no knowledge of the history of Judaism or the establishment of the Jewish state.

Ignorance allows dictators and terrorists to pursue their objectives while a properly informed public preserves and protects what is important to a free and civilized society.

If you believe such things are important, offer some gratitude, not hostility, to the Jews.”

Cal Thomas, Gratitude and Ingratitude: Jews have contributed greatly to our world

And now, let’s look at another part of the passage:

“I will bless those who bless you,
    and whoever curses you I will curse;”

God said that.
