“I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers—and it was not there … in her fertile fields and boundless forests—and it was not there … in her rich mines and her vast world commerce—and it was not there … in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution—and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”
Alexis de Tocqueville
This quote, attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville, was quoted by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in his farewell speech to the nation before leaving office. I found this gem in an inspiring post by Pastor Jim, Oak Hill Baptist Church, Celebrate America. Read it here.

A great quote indeed, any nation that holds to the Words of God will be blessed. But sadly we are seeing the other side of the coin in the UK and Scotland, who have deserted God’s Word.

Yes, it is sad. But we know God is in control. And we know the future. Blessings, Alan!

Oh, I have never heard the entire quote and did not know that Eisenhower had used it. Thanks! It is very inspiring as well as sobering.

We are no longer as good as in former times. If that trend continues, we will fall as all corrupt nations fall. Thank God for His rich promises for those who are His.
