Do You Believe in Magic?

Does magic exist in the world today? Is all magic just an illusion? Or do some people really call upon demonic forces to experience the supernatural?

God warns his people not to participate in such things, yet I fear that many Christians are unaware of the danger they put themselves in when they seek the supernatural.

Have you ever gone to a fortune-teller for fun? Have you read your horoscope and said, “That is so true!” Have you ever participated in a séance or played with a Ouija board?

You may be thinking, “There’s nothing wrong with a little fun. It’s no big deal.” But do you know what God’s word says about this?

Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.”

What does that mean? It means you can do something you think is innocent, but it might be dangerous, very dangerous.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 says: “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.  Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord;”

That is as clear as glass, but I wonder how many Christians know these verses. Fortunetelling is the art of forecasting the future, supposedly by supernatural means, and is an ancient practice which is still popular today.

Fortunetelling is also known as divination. The one who practices this activity is known as a diviner. Fortune-tellers include all those who claim to predict your future or advise your life through such means as Ouija boards, crystal balls, horoscopes, astrology, palm-reading, tarot cards, etc.

Magic, real magic exists in the world today, just as it did long ago. Participating in these things can bring you a lot of trouble. I know a person whose 16-year-old daughter was so filled with fear, she would not sleep in her own room. She said she saw ghosts. What did she do to open this door? I don’t know what she did, but I believe that someone did something that welcomed evil spirits into the home.

The Bible has plenty to say about witchcraft, sorcery and divination. What I have shown you is just the tip of the iceberg. I urge you to study this for yourself. It is so important to be knowledgeable about God’s word in this day and time. It is a time when the world is fascinated with the supernatural. Therefore, these practices will become normalized in society. Perhaps they already are.

“Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.” Acts 16:16-18 NIV

I must tell you that I have had experiences, said to be “in the name of Jesus”, that I do not believe were from God, but from the power of an evil spirit. I will not discuss this in detail because all believers must discern for themselves what is right and true. Discernment comes from knowing God’s word, loving the truth, and protecting your heart. I will close with these verses:

“Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:23 AMP

“Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors.” Psalm 119:24 NIV

“If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. Psalm 119:92 NIV

“All your words are true. All your righteous laws are eternal.” Psalm 119:160

“Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.” Psalm 119:165

  1. A good post Cindy emphasising the dangers of dabbling in evil spirits. Sometimes done with callousness but that is enough to do the damage. I am always weary of these sort of things.

  2. When I was 14 years old, a girl in my class brought a Ouija board to school. Several of us took turns with it. I had never heard of such a thing, but the girl who owned the Ouija said it was a way to contact the dead.

    My paternal grandfather had recently died, and I used her Ouija to try to contact him. One of the boys in our class used the Ouija to try to contact his mother, who had died when he was a little boy.

    Another boy brought a book to school that contained detailed instructions on how to contact the dead, via automatic handwriting and by putting yourself into a hypnotic trance and inviting the spirits to speak through you. I was given this book by the boy who had brought it to school, because he wanted to help me contact my grandfather. I then shared the book with Mike, who wanted to contact his dead mother.

    That book ruined both of our lives.

      1. What happened next was like something out of a horror movie. I was unsuccessful in my attempts to contact my grandfather, and my friend Mike was not able to contact his mom. Instead, we both ended up being haunted by evil spirits.

        I told my mom what was happening, and asked if she knew of a way to get rid of the spirits. “You’re crazy, just like your father,” she said. Then she put me in a mental institution, where I was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Because that’s what they call you when you believe that you are being haunted by ghostly beings.

        One day, during my almost two years in the insane asylum, while I was being taken from my locked ward to another part of the hospital, I saw my friend Mike in the hallway — the boy who had been trying to contact his dead mother.

        “What are you doing here?” I asked.

        “The same thing that happened to you, happened to me,” he said. That was all he was able to tell me, before the nurse made me move on.

        1. I believe you 100%! I am so sorry that happened to you. I encourage you to write your book. There must be many people out there who would be helped by reading your story. Just look at how God has redeemed you! Now you are a strong Christian woman who is a bright light in this dark world. I will be praying for you, sweet friend. I would love to hear more of your story.           2. It was only by the grace of God that I was delivered from those haunting spirits, and released from the mental institution almost two years later.

            Many doctors and therapists have told me over the years that there is nothing schizophrenic about me. In fact, the psychiatrist who initially diagnosed me with schizophrenia told me that he believed I was not schizophrenic or mentally ill in any way. He said I was a completely normal 14 year old, according to my demeanor and my responses to his psychological tests. He also told me that he believed the spirits were real. He said that he had dabbled in the occult in his youth, which had caused him to hear voices for a time, and this was why he had decided to become a psychiatrist — he wanted to know what was wrong with his mind. But eventually he came to believe that the spirits were real, and the way he got rid of them was not through psychotherapy or psychotropic drugs, but through prayer, which he urged me to do.

            So, why did he write in my medical chart that I had schizophrenia when he did not believe that? He said it was because he would be “laughed out of the profession” if he put in my chart that he believed my haunting spirits were real. His past history of hearing voices was a closely guarded secret, again because he did not want to lose his career. But in the meantime, thanks to his diagnosis, I lost my freedom, and I became the outcast in my family of origin because of my “crazy” label.

            I got rid of the haunting spirits over fifty years ago, and for that, I thank the Lord Jesus Christ with all of my heart. My life is good today. I am writing my memoir, as a warning and a help to others. But it’s not an easy story to write!

            1. Wow! Your experience is incredible. Thanks for sharing it with me. I am always ready to hear more. I have an idea. Maybe your book could be a series of letters like you have written me that share your story. You could even jump around in time that way.

        2. Linda, I was 14 years old and very innocent when I was given a Ouija board for a gift. It said on the back of the box it was a “game.” Well, I found out really quick it was NOT a game! It opens a door to evil spirits and fear in your life. With just one scary incidence, I got rid of it really quick! It’s nothing to play with! I’m so sorry that happened to you and the other boy! Neither of you deserved that! But it’s a part of your testimony, and you overcame.

          1. I’m so glad you were wise enough to get rid of it so fast. If only I had done the same thing. Looking back, I believe I used the seances as a way of trying to escape my traumatic and abusive home life, the way some people use drugs and alcohol to escape. Also, my grandfather had really seemed to love me. He made me his sole heir, although my dad ditched his will and claimed the estate for himself, buying a new house and new car with the money that was supposed to go for my college education. I was starved for love and wanted my grandfather back.

            But here’s the thing: years before my paternal grandfather died, my dad told me that he, my grandfather, practised witchcraft. Some years ago, I read somewhere that serious practitioners of witchcraft designate an heir for their powers when they die. Since I was his heir in his will. I believe my grandfather also must have sent his powers to me upon his death, thinking that he was doing me a favor, because I knew the very moment that he died. I was a couple of thousand miles away, sitting in a class in school, listening to the teacher talk, and I had no idea that my 59 year old grandfather was dying — and suddenly I knew his was dead. The feeling was so strong that I asked to be excused and I went to the restroom and cried.

            When I got off the school bus that day, my mom met me at the back door and said “I have some bad news for you.”

            I said “I already know what it is. My grandfather died today.”

            She asked me how I knew, and I said “I don’t know. I just know.”

            I believe this ‘curse’ is why suddenly the girl brought her Ouija board to school, then asked me if I wanted to take it home over the weekend — and then a boy in my study hall gave me his book with the detailed instructions on contacting the dead. We had literally just moved to that town and I had never spoken to those kids before.
            Yes, the generational curse is real. But praise God, I have renounced all of these occult powers and the Lord Jesus Christ has set me 100% FREE. Hallelujah!!

  4. Some don’t realize the dangers of defilement when they choose to participate in these practices. I’ve heard it said for every gift the Lord gives His children, the enemy has a counterfeit.
