Over the last few months, I’ve thought a lot about what I look at and listen to. For example, television, music, news, talk shows, Facebook, etc. How does it all affect me? How does it influence my thinking and my attitudes?
The Bible says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Proverbs 4:23 NIV
What does that mean exactly? I decided to dig in.
A wellspring is the source of a spring or abundant supply. OK. Above all else, I should guard my heart because it is a spring of abundant supply of something called “life”. Hmmm. I still didn’t get it, so I dug in more. I found some clues.
“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” NLT
So, how well I guard my heart determines the course of my life. Well, that’s certainly been true enough (and sometimes in a bad way).
“. . . out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45
My mouth reveals what’s in my heart. Can’t argue with that, either.
“The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
Sometimes we think God only looks at our actions, but what he really examines is our heart. Well, that’s certainly something we should think about! That tells me that no matter how many good works I perform, He is still going to look at my heart.
“. . . the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts.” (1 Chronicles 28: 9
He knows me better than I know myself.
If I’m to guard my heart, I must be careful what I allow to influence me. After years of being a “news junkie”, I rarely even look at the news anymore. Honestly, it doesn’t do anything positive for my attitude. However, I’ve learned that the more I listen to and sing Christian music, the closer I feel to God.
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.” Psalm 100:4
“Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life. I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.” Psalm 146: 1-2
My heart is the spring that nourishes my life. Is that spring sparkling clean or is it polluted by the things of this world? Well, I guess that depends on how well I guard my heart.
With Love,

Really enjoyed reading this. It is so important to be mindful about what we keep feeding ourselves mentally and spiritually.
I feel so close to God too when I spend time listening to worship songs.

Even in stiff-necked obedience, God is still looking at our hearts. He sees our stubbornness, He also sees a heart that is willing to obey Him, even though we think He’s wrong (knowing that we’re the ones who are wrong, but not liking to think about that). 😉

Amen. I have been drawn in recent times to really examine what I am putting in my heart for this very reason. My youth pastor used to put it pretty simply and it’s a phrase that’s stayed with me: garbage in, garbage out. Thanks for highlighting some great scripture here and a much needed reminder.

Your post reminds me of Psalm 19:14 ”May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalms 19:14 Thank you for sharing🌻

Amen, Cindy. I have been listening to less and less news, too. Mainly because I would have to to sort out what is true and what is fake, and I don’t have time for that. Yes, music – worship music. I love it, and it is often the way I connect with God, playing and singing it, or just letting it play in my home and setting the atmosphere.
Have a blessed week. – Annie

Chuck Colson’s book, Born Again, opened my eyes to political maneuvers. That did it for me. Thanks for sharing. Blessings, Annie!

I was convicted last winter to quit watching Criminal Minds. I did but it was hard. Then I gave in and started watching it again, suddenly I couldnt afford Netflix. a month or so later I remembered the library had all the seasons on dvd. My DVD player crashed and wouldnt open. God was making a point loud and clear. I didnt need gruesome images going into my mind and soul.
Thank you for your confirmation.

I get it. I was convicted about watching 24. It was hard to stop watching in the middle of the season, but I’m glad I stopped. It’s encouraging to walk with the Lord together! Amen? Blessings, Kate!

I need to work on letting the good in my mind (memorized scripture/sermons/devotions) to get to my heart…I don’t understand why but this is something I currently struggle with😏

I’ll bet there’s a lot more good in your heart than you realize!
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)
