According to research, only 9% of Americans have read the entire Bible more than once. No wonder they don’t know what it says!

Christians need to know the Bible really well. There is great danger in relying on others to teach us what God’s Word says (no matter how famous the preacher or how big their church).

Why do we do it? Are we too lazy to study our Bible for ourselves? Is it easier to listen to great speakers telling us what God’s Word says and means?

I know this because years ago I was part of a church that gradually slid over into false teaching. The first thing I noticed was arrogance from the pulpit, a message that says, “We have revelation of the Scripture, but that church down the street, they’re religious … I used to go to one of those churches.” (chuckle, chuckle) The congregation begins to feel superior to other Christians.

The Bible says, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18

The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” 2 Timothy 4:3

This happens because Christians do not read and study their Bible for themselves, and therefore they do not recognize false doctrine.

What does God’s Word say?

Colossians 2:8 “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.”

Proverbs 1:22 “How long will you gullible people love being so gullible? How long will you mockers find joy in your mocking? How long will you fools hate knowledge?”

Proverbs 22:3 “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.”

Proverbs 1:32 “For the waywardness of the naive will kill them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them.”

Proverbs 14:15 “A gullible person believes anything,
    but a sensible person watches his step.”

Romans 16:18 “For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.”

Ephesians 5:6 “Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.”

2 Thessalonians 2:3 “Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.”

2 Corinthians 11:13-15 “For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

Well, it’s certainly something for us to think about….

  2. I’ve read the Bible a few times, and I love every word of it. One can not read the Bible, at all, and not be affected positively, creatively and spiritually by it. Every word is so important, and every word brings light, kindness and hope to any who read it.

  3. I am so grateful that God drew me early on to study His Word intently and daily. I never understood what a gift this is (as are the resulting rewards) until I found out that not all Christians are similarly consistent.

  5. Hey, I think I went to that church, too!
    Yes, I study the Bible, in large segments. I was having trouble memorizing single verses, because I was spending too much time and effort remembering the numbers (chapter and verse). Then I realized I wanted to know these verses in CONTEXT, anyway, and if I had continued in theater, I would be memorizing whole plays – why not something far more significant? So, I started to memorize chapters, and later, books. (The short ones!)
    Since then, I can tell when people are pulling a verse out of context to make their point. In other words, yes, I agree it’s VERY important to study the Bible for yourself!

    2. That’s good. I’m remembering verses, because it reflects my life. Plus, God keeps feeding me His word. I am so thankful to be open to it now.

  6. Absolutely true! It is so important to spend time daily in God’s Word, reading, memorizing and studying. That is something my parents taught me as a kid and it has stayed with me. No other way to know if someone is teaching truth or not. Yet I know many who have never read the Bible through or even the New Testament, they just pick out a few verses here and there and think it is enough. So sad. I read through the Bible every year and study it much. Great post!

But I love the Lord, go to church with Cindy Dawson and her lovely Daughter Christina .they are my friends as well as my sister’s in christ.may, the Lord, continue to bless them and all of us. Please keep myself and my family in your prayers.my son, needs it the most ,his name is Brandon,(aka,country) he has been bullied etc, my husband and myself are trying to get him on our lease .He is 25 but mentally younger like 14,He is autistic and has epileptic seizures.thank you Julie Chapman

  8. I’m reading the Bible, not to hit some quota, but because I want to learn more about God. Anyone can read the Bible many times, but the really question is do they live the Bible? God knows the Bible, he wrote it, but God looks at how we use his truth. The Bible is our lives, do we breathe it in and walk it out?
    And I want to thank you for the scriptures. Especially Paul. He shake people up with the truth. And it hurts because we are required to shed clothes of the world, to be covered by the veil of Christ.

  10. Incredibly, it was only during this past year that I committed to reading through the entire Bible. I’d been a Christian for several years already, but hadn’t yet prioritized reading through all of the Scriptures.
    God has now opened my eyes to the beauty of His Word and I am so thankful to have this precious Book always at the ready. He really does change hearts!

  11. After being in the new age for 14 years, I left all that and decided to follow Christ. The first thing I did was read the entire Bible, because there are SO MANY misconceptions about what it says, the context, and what it means.

    I am happy to say that was almost a year ago, and I absolutely love reading my Bible 🙂

  12. Very accurate post Cindy! I think the lack of reading God’s Word is an epidemic in modern evangelical Christianity (of which I’m a part). I don’t know about you, but I see very few Pastors addressing this serious issue. Yes, it’s easier to let someone else feed you, like pastoral sermons and listening to one’s favorite TV or You Tube preacher.
    Somewhere along the way, each person claiming to be a Christian has to grow up enough to feed themselves.

    1. I agree. I’m concerned for those new Christians that are “on fire” for Jesus and they’re hungry to learn as much as they can. Many of these people are easily seduced by the excitement and they don’t recognize the false teaching which is often mixed in with enough truth to sound good (unless you know God’s Word).       1. Yes Cindy. That was me when I was a new Christian at age 20. No one to truly disciple me. Only by the grace of God did I not fall away from Him. Keep up the great writing and God bless you.

  13. I enjoy all your posts! This one is so very important for people to read. Our pride easily gets in our way. I love reading God’s Word. I read it every day. We are so vulnerable to Satan’s subtle ways, and I am not immune to it. I NEED God’s Word to keep me focused on the Lord, and to turn away from temptations! Thank you for your blog. I have been spending the morning reading your blogs. God bless!

  14. And how incredible is it that you only quote apostolic writings and nothing before Matthew? You can start by understanding Psalm 119, in which the praise is unending for the Torah (which, by the way, is what Paul told Timothy was sufficient for all those things as they didn’t even HAVE a “New Testament” for hundreds of years).

    1. Jen, I quoted 5 verses from Proverbs and Psalm 119 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. The truths of the New Testament embody the teachings of Christ. I’m not sure what your point is.
